Happy to see. I joined out of high school for five years. Best decision I made as it helped me grow as a young adult.

Rétention will be the problem once those previously unemployed youth experience the reality of working in the military.

I myself want to join because I think there would be some fascinating learning opportunities. But I heard that it’s mostly a dead end.
Perhaps that has changed recently. But just the fact that I’m considering it is unusual. My motivation is the war in Ukraine. I hope that I can lend a helping hand, perhaps learning how to build defence equipment 😍
Probably setting myself up for disappointment, but a guy can dream.

It’s the only employer not sponsored by the temporary foreign worker program. They probably can’t get a job anywhere else.

Not surprising when the economic outlook for the youth is so bleak.

An important factor mentioned in the article in a quote from one of the recruits: “I think the Canadian Forces worked really hard to improve their image and also diversity,” says Jerome-Valdez. “I think it has become a more welcoming environment for different people.”

They all got a major raise, so that’s a pretty large incentive as well

I applied myself recently, because I have a full time job, live a minimalistic lifestyle to save and invest as much as possible, and still live with my parents.

It’s the youth unemployment levels that are causing this not necessarily an increase in Canadian patriotism.

That’s what happens when jobs are scarce, wages are low, and food and housing are expensive.
Enjoy spending your entire first contract on BTL, troops, because there’s no one to staff your courses.

I wonder what’s motivating that surge.

Hmmm, I wonder who the recruits are…

Well you see, „Members will receive $10,000 upon completion of basic training, $20,000 once qualified in trade, and $20,000 upon completion of the first contract, when signing on for another period of service.“
The first 30k of that is just finishing basic and your trades training. Then another 4 years they throw another 20k at you to continue working.
That entire time you’re still receiving normal pay. (Starting private salary had been increased by 20%)

Attrition rate two years ago was the worst I’ve ever seen at about 15%.
Leadership made some bafflingly poor decisions and it was like the CAF nicked an artery.

I know someone that’s in Officer training right now. He’s in a rapid training program that’s training recruits at least twice as fast as normal.
I think they’ve seen how fast Ukrainian soldiers have been training and how well they’ve been putting their training to the test in the field. It’s surprised everyone at their efficiency and effectiveness that they’re upending their normal laid back approach to training.
