I guess building plenty of housing in China helps keep the cost of living down for workers in China. China can pay low wages and produce products for lower prices and continue to gain market share while the other countries fall further behind.

This massive surplus isn’t necessarily a sign of strength; it’s a symptom of a broken economic model. Because domestic consumption in China is so weak (wages represent a low % of GDP), they *have* to dump their excess production on the rest of the world. It’s basically exporting deflation. The rest of the world literally cannot absorb this indefinitely without their own industries collapsing.
