France is under mounting pressure to help finance Ukraine by using €18bn of Russian sovereign assets largely immobilised at private banks whose identities Paris has kept under wraps for more than two years.

The holdings have come under renewed scrutiny as the European Commission pursues a plan for a ‚reparations loan‘ to Ukraine backed by Russian central bank assets under sanctions.

    2. There goes the solidarity. Everyone’s happy to use Russian assets as long as it’s not parked in their country.

Typical. Loudly touting unity, the need for independence from the U.S., the need to show resolve and strength, and then cowardly engaging in secret dealings.

Tu postoje međunarodni zakoni o zaštiti kapitala i ako se oni prekrše ne bi bilo više sigurnog deponiranja i ulaganja u takve zemlje.

Yeah, keep piling on the pressure on Belgium to bankrupt itself with this stupid, illegal plan, but I don’t see any of the other countries holding proportionally much smaller and less risky amounts of frozen Russian funds volunteering to seize theirs. Bunch of hypocritical assholes.

    7. It would be really interesting to know the full list of frozen assets across the EU (looking at you Germany), the pressure level on Belgium will become much weaker I’m sure. Let’s check exactly how much there is in each country and who’s willing to use that under the risk of having to pay it back in the future.

Belgium has France to keep it company when it comes to Russian assets in the EU…

    9. Is it the banks refusing or the government? Because in other articles citing the ft (paywall) they say it’s french banks holding the assets in question. That isn’t very surprising. I think people upset at Belgium are more upset that the Belgian government came out against it than Euroclear. Still imo all Russian assets in the EU should be included if at all possible. If only for the fact that no country afterwards can leave the Belgiums to deal with the consequences on their own.

You can always count on France to find a way to make honour march alongside profit.
