We need this on a federal and EU level as well as for critical infrastructure and the military.

I hope some money saved on the licenses get invested in the development of OSS products.
Munich did the same thing.
But then Bill Gates paid us a visit, for some reason we backpaddled on that and all of a sudden a Microsoft Office (not the software) appeared.
Crazy how that works. Please don’t let yourself get bribed like we did.

I hope more governments, governmental organizations and municipalities follow this example and share their knowledge and improvements back so that we in Europe can Microsoft independently within some years.
One thing is for sure, we cannot trust America anymore and should not rely on their technology as much as we can.
Schleswig Holstein is doing what a lot of governments talk about but never actually commit to. Switching to open source is not just about saving money, it is about taking control of your own tech stack instead of renting it from Microsoft forever.
They need dedicated budget to contribute to the upstream of the software they use. That’s the only sustainable model.
The more serious work is done by open source software the easier they’ll be to use
In a couple years they will move to the cloud, pay 3 times as much to an internet giant and will frame it as a victory!
Founder here. Me and my cofounder were actively looking into alternatives. Teams integration is too powerful these days, so we felt there’s no way around it. Not sure what to do, but we might go for microsoft products. Any ideas?
It seems a simple migration if you switch Office to LibreOffice. But an enterprise scale IT environment is much more complex than that. If the municipality still lives in the beginning of 2000 and would like to stay there with the productivity level too then that is ok.
But the IT world became much more complex and more effective / productive.
How to work together, how to communicate, home office challenge, IT administration for 10s of thousands of end points, mobile device management, server infrastructure administration and lockdown, IT security (zero trust implementation), public service infrastructure, process integration and automation, open data and data lake management for public services etc etc.
Having a mixed open source solution for everything is an IT operational and IT security nightmare in this scale. No real support, no SLA on bug remediation, roadmap planning, hardware maintenance, long term planning etc.
What we need to focus on is to have strategic alliances with big European ISV-s and service provides like DT, SAP, Siemens even to create an US alternative enterprise IT solution for enterprises. We can build on open source solutions but we also need to compete with Mircosoft, Amazon and Google on it. They have 20 years of advantage and billions of cash to accelerate. It is a hard fight. Some less effective municipalities can switch without big problem but if we force the cash cow enterprises to switch from big US companies productivity loss will create great economic problems.
It’s about fucking time, dude. What if Trump gets mad and says, oh, we don’t want your Microsoft applications to run? It’s a national security risk.
All of Europe needs to exit American tech.
It’s no longer safe to put all your eggs in trumps hands.
