Every EU forces has been underfunded for decades, no wonder we keep hearing things like this. No EU country is prepared for a full scale war as the cost of maintaining full readiness would be an enormous burden.

    3. Isn’t it an open secret that in case of conflict they would sail to Australia? j/k

    4. The replacements should have been coming into service in 2024, not 2032 like they are.

Capital Megaprojects like ballistic missile submarines weren’t something the coalition gov wanted to put money into and let it sit.

Another mess that was absolutely avoidable…

One of the quietest reactor designs ever created, that can stay submerged for months, with some of the highest training standards in the world, is suddenly not fit for purpose.

      Ok.

If the Telegraph, which is so pro-UK, says so, I fear for the state those submarines will be in…

I wonder if all of these articles about how the US is going to abandon Europe or that Russia is about to attack, or that everything is falling apart; are really about taking money away from public programs that benefit society, and putting those funds for corporate welfare in the form of increased military-industrial contracts through war-mongering and inflating fears so that social programs are cut, thus creating the conditions for societal collapse and seeded by Russian disinformation.

That is absolutely the longest sentence I’ve ever written.

The most important equipment within the UK SSBN – submarine launched ballistic missile – are all leased from US. So if Harry or Meghan piss off Trump, UK doesn’t even have any delivery vehicle for their nuclear warhead.

Not sure if we should blame the immigrants, Brexit, or the lack of decent tea,
but at least the subs are finally as functional as the government. 🇬🇧

The issues are mainly about the Royal Navy’s ship and submarine R+D design center at Bristol being closed in the early ’90s. Which meant that ship manufacturers who had previously been given a 95% complete ship/submarine design. Had to design the whole ship)submarine from scratch. Whereas previously they’d just chosen which ovens, microwaves, washing machines binks etc. to install.

There weren’t enough orders in the ’90s for SSN subs to follow on from the Vanguard class. This led to a multi year gap in production. With all of the workers being laid off. The better ones got new jobs away from Barrow-In-Furness and the rest had skills that decayed.

The submarine overhaul and scrapping base at Devonport. Was neglected for years. With the Health and Safety Executive prohibiting it from carrying out scrapping duties in about 2000 and it wasn’t in the mid 2010s expected to be able to resume scrapping until 2020+. The article is slightly wrong, we have scrapped one SSN sub IIRC HMS Conqueror but definitely a C class.

Devonport has also only recently been refitted to allow it to refurb and repair the Astute Class and it’s only relatively recently that HMS Vanguard has left Devonport for a (9 year?) unscheduled maintenance and refuel due to a design flaw with her reactor.

So none of the Astutes got the routine maintenance that they needed for years. So the problems piled up, until they were unserviceable.

despite spending billions on aggression, our fleet is not ready for our own wars?

maybe we should cancel Brexit and develop peaceful relationships with our neighbours?

I’m glad France isn’t facing similar issues and our submarines programs are all on schedule now.

It is Us made, US maintained … the Uk is the biggest US Vassal of all and somehow no one knows it.

British soldiers even pay in US$ in their own home bases – even in Great Britain itself!
