    Japan Agricultural Cooperatives (JA) are the source of grief for consumers.

  3. its because their prices and economy stagnated for decades but new policies have changed in line with western economies to seek a litle inflation for economic growth, so the prices finally starting to climb along with economy

  4. Quick math show that rice has been reaching record prices for thousands of years in Japan.

  5. wow $40-80 (AUD) for a medium size bag of rice…..those are crazy prices. I can easily get a 5kg bag for $10 here in Aus.

  6. I saw an article a while ago saying people were not buying rice and rice brokers were panicking.

    The government made a show of how they’re going to reduce rice prices earlier in the year but then took a hard right turn to parade hardening immigration policy because the media and populist movements deemed that a much bigger issue (though reality and data on the ground say cost of living is more pressing)

  8. They have strict rules that try to keep small farms profitable. It would be great if the small farms were having a bumper year, but I bet that some middleman is making the money.
