The Ukrainians already installed a temporary patch over the hole in the Shelter. The arch would still contain the vast majority of the dust in the event of a large-scale collapse of the old Sarcophagus.

Frankly, the arch was never perfectly hermetically sealed in the first place. It is now just a bit more leaky. Any dust escaping would contribute somewhat to the existing contamination surrounding the site. They lost the ability to maintain negative pressure inside the protected space, and will not be able to control temperature and humidity. But the rain will be kept out, and that’s the main thing.

It’s a big expensive headache, but not a serious threat. Main problem is serious damage to the crane system, which could delay important work by decades.

I wouldn’t be surprise if Putin is planning deliberate destruction of radiation shelter just to cause more grief in Chernobyl and surrounding areas.
