America has had a credit card dept problem for generations. This isn’t new.

I used these services for awhile.

I used them to buy small things like Chipotle and such. Once I realized I was about $150 in debt for small fast food purchases I immediately paid it off and deleted the app. In hindsight it was stupid, but back then it was just an easy option. 15 years ago I got into a pay day loan cycle that ended in me destroying my credit for years, so maybe I could see the writing on the wall with how predatory these things are and it helped me avoid another disaster.

Now my work is offering Daily Pay options which is another problem in itself also.

    3. I avoided the buy now pay later options because I was suspicious that it would hurt my credit score. Some of the services such as the ones PayPal offered involved a credit check. Not worth it imo.

    4. If consumers were actually financially strained, they would not have spent $1 billion on stuff that they not only don’t need, but are presumably going to give away.

    5. The older I get the more I dislike Christmas for the strain and demand it puts on people.

Trump gave Americans “ the biggest tax cut in history “ Americans now have more money than they know what to do with.

    7. It really sucks that a majority of the population thinks that not getting someone a gift really means the lack of love to/for people

    8. At Thanksgiving we suggested not doing a gift exchange this Christmas. It was well received.

Stop buying crap, buy food, basic necessities, move to a place you can afford the rent or the price of a house, yes it is not ideal, it is hard as hell specially in the beginning but do you want to live a more peaceful life or the chaos is fine? Your choice.

This is a bit misleading without more context.

BNPL options like PayPal credit where you get 6mo to pay off purchases at 0% financing is as attractive to some smart buyers as it is to struggling ones.

The more interesting stat would be what percentage of these BNPL purchases end up owing interest, especially considering most BNPL options charge you the ENTIRE interest back if you don’t pay it off completely in the 0% window.

How about don’t buy shit one year. No one needs any of this corporate greed inflated price cheap quality shit.

    12. One of em offered a $40 discount if I used it, another offered a $5 discount per purchase for 3 purchases, a third offered 5-7% cash back on Amazon, a fourth was just a 2% cash back credit card.

    13. Useful-Ad2640 on

I used target credit card to get 5% off the switch 2 and paid it the same day.

    14. The news kept saying how Americans broke last year’s record on Christmas spend during Black Friday sales given the current economic outlook.

What they fail to address is the fact everything costs more and consumers are going into more debt.

    15. The financial industry has only one solution for the working class problems: more debt traps

    16. SloppyMeathole on

There’s nothing more American than taking on debt to buy overpriced junk made by slaves working for billionaires.

I used buy now pay later for my Black Friday purchase. Amazon had 0% financing for 12 months with the Chase Prime card. I have the money but it helps with cash flows

    18. Lol PayPal ran a promo for 20% off your purchase when you use Buy Now, Pay Later in 4 Installments. This was a very popular promo. This does not mean “U.S. Consumers are so financially strained…” it just means people like saving 20% on their purchases.

    19. I do that every BF, because there’s almost always a 0% apr deal, and it means I can afford something I normally cannot without increasing its price, and I then get to invest the money I would have spent on it and get 3-5% for a while while the loan is paid off.

Wealthy people do this with their houses for millions of dollars. It’s a win win as long as you can make payments.and don’t end up with any interest.

I feel like I’ve heard this one before. I’m sure it turned out Great!

    21. Crazy_Donkies on

To be fair.  I just spent 5 minutes going to Fox, CNN, and MSNBC.  You need to dig deep before you find articles highlighting Americans struggling with their finances.  However, if you spend 5 minutes on Reddit, you’ll find 60 articles highlighting bubbles and financial struggle.  This is the downside of social media, it becomes a self-fulfilling cycle.

My point being, there IS a structural issue in America hurting the middle class and lower.  Unfortunately our electorate chose the wrong person that will continue to support trickle UP economics, via regressive, flat taxes.  Pain will continue.   HOWEVER, we are not at the „cliff face ready to crash out“ reddit thinks we are on.  People are always struggling, so there’s still time to help Americans.

    22. TastyTboneSteak on

If these people are so „financially strained“ why the hell are they buying shit on black Friday and cyber Monday? Oh that’s right wrong priorities and bad debt.

    23. I used BNPL because paypal was offering 20% cashback on the purchase. Got $90 back. Waiting for the cashback points to clear before I pay it off.

    24. thotfullawful on

So… like what happened in the 1920’s when the stock market crashed due to overuse of credit and no one being able to pay?

    25. SpaceSnaxxx on

Wow, instead of saying NO to consumeristic holidays, they’ve dug deeper into debt. Which statistically won’t be paid off fully by the next month. Too many people are brainwashed about gift giving.

    26. As long as they’re doing it for cash back/perks, spreading it out with 0% interest… and paying it off… all is gravy.

    27. VioletJones6 on

It’s hilarious that these companies think they’re going to make money hand over fist on high interest rates while the people actually using these services are banking on the whole financial system collapsing before they’re forced into bankruptcy.

I don’t think people realize how rampant the nihilism is right now.

    28. SellsNothing on

I mean I used a credit card but I’m still going to pay it off in full once my statement closes.

Using a credit card doesn’t mean you’re financially strained but okay lol

    29. Sigh.  Prices won’t go down if people keep spending.  It’s sad how little willpower people have.  It’s either lack of willpower or intelligence.

    30. Oceanbreeze871 on

My power bill costs the same as peak summer with AC running all day. My usage is less than half. Costs still way up.

    31. The quick answer is to set a certain amount of money to blow, or just say you don’t have it. The real problem can be described as 1 of 2 major issues:
      1. Overspending due to lack of financial control.
      2. Under earning and lack of meeting basic needs.

Folks have to figure out which financial issue they have and attack it. The economy is not helping.

    32. Financial strain? Yeah. I get it.

But using Black Friday credit swipers also shows a population that feels they MUST spend by any means necessary.

A scary amount of college age kids do not know how thier credit cards work. And they often just don’t care.

The pay later thing is fine if it has zero interest. I’d that’s available I’ll take it.

      A zero cost loan.
