This was one of the reasons raising the urgency to use the nuclear bombs: the Soviet Union was gearing up to start attacking Japan as well, but the nukes and the quick surrender they precipitated headed off a Soviet invasion.

Interesting that China (中国) would be assigned Shikoku, and not the Chugoku (中国) region

Kind of like an alternate history in the Sengoku period with the Mori clan in Chugoku region taking over Kyushu, the Chosokabe clan unifying Shikoku, the Date clan unifying Tohoku region and the Ezo land (Hokkaido), and lastly Oda Nobunaga ruling the crucial central Japan including Kyoto.

Could have made for a very interesting scenario where the ROC collapses quicker and loses Taiwan but keeps existing only in its occupation zones in Japan

It’s hard to imagine Great Britain having a place here. China would be more likely to have Okinawa/Ryukyu, considering that it had long been a vassal state of China before the occupation by Japan.

China later prevented all of this. At the time, China’s leader, Chiang 蒋介石Kai-shek, refused to occupy the country and prevented the Soviet Union from stationing troops, thus averting the division of Japan.

I guarantee the Soviets would have given North Japan the same treatment as East Germany.
