Hours after The Atlantic reported earlier this year that top Trump administration officials had discussed airstrike plans in an unsecured Signal group chat that included a journalist, Vice President J.D. Vance fired off a bizarre message, the New Republic reported: “This chat’s kind of dead,” he wrote at 2:26 am. “Anything going on?”

While the vice president was making wise cracks, the others, like treasury secretary Scott Bessent, were covering their tracks by changing their display names and the chat’s settings so messages disappeared more quickly.

No one responded.
