      Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin was asked by CNN’s John Berman Wednesday exactly how much of the Somali American community in Minnesota, an estimated 40,000 of whom were born in Somalia, could be considered garbage. Her response was a word salad nowhere near a condemnation.

      This is just another flavor of the „cat eating Haitians in Ohio“ trope Vance promoted in 2024, although that was arguably worse since that was a complete fabrication, while it is quite possible that some Somali immigrants aren’t obeying the law or aren’t producing as much in economic value as they receive in benefits. However, this would be true of all refugees since there is often a transition period to full economic independence when fleeing from a conflict country or from political persecution and starting over again in the US. The problem is the blanket disparaging tone and rhetoric that casts them as a monolithically „evil“ group that should be banned and eliminated. The fact is, if you can’t give specific, verifiable facts, and retreat into deflection, then you are implicitly admitting your generalized denunciation is ungrounded.

      I’m confused why so many young people are going down with the ship. Trump likely won’t live to the end of his term, but seeing younger folks throw their entire reputations away like this is bizarre. A main focus for the next (obviously democrat) administration is to properly punish all these people.

      I have had a couple negative interactions with people in the Somali community in my time in MN. That said those were individuals who were assholes, not the whole community. Trump and MAGA are the garbage here.
