The US itself is very protectionistic.
And we just have to accept that when it comes to defense spending and many other big spending bills they will be tailored for domestic industry. That’s really the only way to get enough political support for them.

The US pushing the EU to spend more on their militaries was never about the EU carrying their own weight but about using EU expenditures to fund economy of scale of American armaments while making the EU increasingly dependent on the US.
Just look at the F-35. Mission data must be sent from servers the US can access. Some maintenance must be done by US personnel. Weapon integration of EU weapons won’t happen this decade forcing countries with F-35s to buy AMRAAMs or not have a BVR missile. Some key part replacements are only made in the US. The F-35 uses a closed source system that only the US and Israel can access so only they can perform updates.
The US doesn’t want allies, it wants client states that won’t fight back because the world is scary without American protection.

The US isn’t cut out of the buildup. They’re just not the main supplier. As they never were.
The US wants Europe to spend more on their own protection, threatens the sovereignty of allied countries and explicitly states that Europe is a burden to them and that the mutual relationship we have had with each other for decades is bad for the US.
The US has had access to a huge, rich market, strategic placement of military bases from which they can project power, a dominant cultural influence over the western world, and they supply a large amount of European military, technological, and administrative infrastructure at both the state and industry level. They also gained a Europe with no ambition of militarisation.
Europe gained security, stability, lower defence costs, and a semi-integration with the US.
Both sides gained positives out of this relationship. But, if the US wants out, and is showing it is an unstable partner, Europe in it’s current state will rather try to make homegrown alternatives.
I personally don’t care either way, either we have a relationship, or we don’t, but the US can’t expect to pull out of the relationship we’ve had and then keep all the benefits that they have gotten because of it. Europe seems to largely understand that, if the relationship fails, we will lose these benefits and have to rely on ourselves. Which is much easier today, because Europe is much more united and integrated than ever before.
I find it odd that a lot of US politicians claims that they are just losing money on the relationship with Europe though. This relationship has been a huge economic boon for the US, but a detangling of our relationship will obviously mean that trade, and any economic action will happen on less US aligned terms, because they have made it clear that Europe has to look out for itself.
