Das ist eine kraftvolle Rede. Was die Ukrainer durchmachen, ist schrecklich. Wir sollten stolz auf das sein, was wir getan haben, um die Ukraine in diesem ungerechten Krieg zu unterstützen. Aber es erinnert mich auch daran, wie viel Glück wir haben, in diesem wunderbaren Land zu leben. Trotz aller Mängel könnte es weitaus schlimmer sein.

I don’t understand why some people on the left are so anti-ukraine. It’s like just because NATO backed Ukraine, you must automatically do the opposite. Child like politics. Have NATO done bad things yes? But that doesn’t in this case they’re actually on the right side
You’d have to wonder by that logic do they oppose 1916 and the war of independence too? How do they feel about the 1800s here?
It just strikes me as utter hypocrisy to be standing in Ireland of all places criticising Ukraine for defending itself against an aggressive imperialist neighbour that thinks it’s got some absolute right to own your country.
Does that calculation change if Russia invaded say Finland or Sweden for example?
Russia behaves very much like a 18th or 19th century imperial power – just with modern weaponry and ability to cause intense destruction.
PBP’s absolute-zero-cold takes on Ukraine are either because :
1. They’re such an ideologically driven lot they immediately jump to not justifying violence of any kind (even if it means thwarting an existential threat ; we’ve seen the horror Russia soldiers have inflicted on occupied towns like Bucha, would you honestly be okay laying down arms and letting them roll across the whole country?)
2. They’re so anti-west pilled, any acts of violence against even a somewhat west-aligned country is a cathartic release in the name of anti-imperial struggle or some shit.
In any case, fuck them and any Russia enabler.
Folks. They all need to read up on the history of the crimea and donbass region before anyone can comment on anything.

The man really deserves to go down in history for how he has represented his country on a global scale. Even in his non native tongue his speeches stir emotion and send a clear and levelled message. There are many who would struggle to do that here, nevermind after facing the daily horrors Ukraine has.
