      The weird thing where tech companies and writers assume most people actually upgrade their personal Windows PC, and not just keep whatever version they have until they get their next PC. Most of those PCs will never upgrade, they will be replaced at one point.

      Let’s not forget the fact a lot of PC components to upgrade have gone way up in price and fewer people use PCs than ever or use them often enough to care.

      I upgraded from Windows 10…to Ubuntu Linux and am mighty happy. The HW couldn’t support 11 , 10 is really not fully supported anymore, and I don’t need to buy a new PC.

      There is only reasons *not* to upgrade. My workplace forced it onto our office machines and everyone has seen significant performance decreases. Add in their unwanted AI and privacy violating „features“ and I don’t see how anyone voluntarily chooses this shitbox.

      Up until recently I had one that was too old to upgrade. That wasn’t really a deciding factor in building a new PC though. I needed to be able to install more RAM for the things I want to do, and I was hardware limited.

      I downgraded mine because of the AI bullshit. Waiting for Steam OS to gain popularity, it’s so amazing on the Deck.

      The crazy thing is my old Pc works and I’m supposed to buy a new one because the OS needs an upgrade…

      Too old to update and still working great for their use case. What more is there to say? 

      The only people who want to upgrade are the C-suite at Microsoft.

      It’s a tale as old as Microsoft. Windows 95, great, ME horrible, XP great, Vista horrible, 7 great, 8 horrible, then they skip 9, and 10 is good. I could do the server breakdown too, but the story there is weirder and most of them eventually get decent, because the tale of server OSes is, get it when R2 launches. There are some doozies though, like 2012 non R2 has something fundamentally wrong with the network stack.

      Microsoft is about to find out how easy it is for us to abandon their OS in 2025.

      I went to upgrade my old laptop from 2017 to 11 recently.. and found the disk drive had given out. That’s one way to save me some effort apparently

      Shit is too expensive to replace perfectly good hardware. I usually build PCs with the beat CPU at the time. Then use it for 5 to 10 years. Lately the hardware is so good that there is no need to replace it for the next 10 to 15 years. My last build was ryzen 5950x around covid. I don’t see myself replacing it for another 5 to 7 years. It runs everything quickly.

      I love how they wait for an economic depression to shove that unnecessary shite down our throats. One billion is a number too large to even contemplate, but MS knows best. Talk about out of touch with reality.

      I’ve for an older Dell Inspiron 5520 with an Intel Core i5-3210M, with maxed out RAM and an SSD which I bought in 2012. It came with Windows 7, and it qualified for Windows 10.

      The machine does everything I need it to do, and still holds up very well. Is it a speed demon, absolutely not. However, I think that it still has a lot of life left in it for basic stuff. This planned obsolescence shit is for the birds.

      Journos needs to stop chasing who likes or dislikes operating systems. It’s a personal choice. This beat got really old, really fast.

      if I get a new computer, I plan on seeing if I can just transfer my windows 10 to it

      What this says, is that people really don’t care about upgrading their work and streaming machine.

      I can upgrade both my laptop and my PC. I refuse. I don’t want or need an these new „features“ in 11

      I feel like basically any midrange or higher PC made in the last decade or so has been „good enough“ for your basic web browsing/streaming media/office tasks.

      I had to pull some files off an old laptop with a 2nd or 3rd gen i5 dual core recently, and honestly it felt *fine*. Obviously not as fast as the Ryzen 2500U laptop that replaced it or the Ryzen 7840U laptop I have now, but the user experience was far from terrible. Pretty much the only reason it’s not still seeing use as a spare PC is because Asus decided it should charge via a tiny and fragile barrel plug that likes to break if you look at it the wrong way.

      I could easily see someone with more basic computer needs/wants running an old computer like that as long as the battery still holds a charge, regardless of whether Microsoft says they need to upgrade or not.

      This is the future. Holding onto your car your phone your home as long as you financially can because it costs so much more to replace them with zero actual improvements.
