This was bound to happen. Japan has depended on proprietary Western-owned font IP to render Japanese in digital products. That’s wild! This is the home of Nintendo, Sony, Bandai, LINE. Japan needs to stop treating fonts like optional visual decoration and recognize them as linguistic infrastructure, as essential as Unicode or keyboard layouts. There are open JP fonts, but you can’t write Japanese in high-quality branded UI fonts at scale without relying on proprietary licensing, mostly owned by a US company.
