The RSO claim to represent the Rohingya, the largest population of stateless people, in the world. They formed in 1982 after the Burmese dictator, Ne Win, stripped them of their citizenship under the pretext of „preventing illegal migration from Bangladesh.“ The majority of Rohingya are Muslim and speak a language similar to Chittagonian and Chakma. Like the Rohingya, the Kaman/Kamein people are majority Muslim and live in Arakan/Rakhine State; however, the Kaman are considered indigenous Rakhine citizens. Also important to note that the Rakhine kingdom of Mrauk-U controlled Chittagong centuries before the British Raj was formed. There are minorities of Hindus and Christians among the Rohingya.

For reasons that are still headscratching, RSO and other Rohingya armed groups such as ARSA [decided ](https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/myanmars-frontline-rohingya-fighters-junta-face-common-enemy-2024-09-06/)to [collaborate with the Burmese military ](https://rohingyakhobor.com/more-rohingya-youths-kidnapped-by-tatmadaw-and-arsa/)(who are doing most of the atrocities) instead of creating a united front against both the junta and AA. AA is consistent in fighting the junta, and helped other groups like the PDF attack positions outside of Arakan.
