The German Defense Ministry confirmed Tuesday that “a shipment of thousands of rounds of ammunition” bound for the armed forces was [stolen from a civilian contractor’s trailer](https://www.cnn.com/2025/12/02/europe/german-army-ammunition-stolen-latam-intl?utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=missions&utm_source=reddit) last week.
A spokesperson told CNN that the ammunition was stolen “from the trailer of the civilian carrier’s transport vehicle, which had been parked overnight” between November 24 and 25.
On November 28, the military discovered that the shipment was missing approximately 20,000 rounds of ammunition, the spokesperson said, without providing further details.
The military is investigating the theft with the help of local police, the German Armed Forces said in a statement sent to CNN.
A Defense Ministry spokesperson told German magazine [Der Spiegel](https://www.spiegel.de/panorama/justiz/burg-bei-magdeburg-fast-20-000-schuss-munition-aus-transporter-fuer-die-bundeswehr-gestohlen-a-c7e21434-111d-497a-ad77-e8325f5b42a9) on Tuesday that the military is taking the theft “very seriously.”

Considering this happened in Saxony it was probably rightwing extremists who knew that the trucks were parked there at night.
Worrying nontheless
Think I’ve seen a comment somewhere they’re blaming the contractor as they weren’t supposed to stop overnight in unsecured areas, and they should have had an escort vehicle.
This is fairly common practice across most of Europe when transporting ammunition and other similarly sensitive natures.
The questions I would deem as most pressing is :”did thieves identify the vehicle as carrying ammunition by chance ie from the ADR plates, and then choose to rob it?”
*Or*
“Were they following said vehicle knowing what it was carrying and saw an opportunity for theft?”
If the answer to question 2 is “yes” then that’s considerably more concerning, and far more concerning than simply the theft of a few tins of 9mm.
Funny, but such a thing is widespread in Russia, but internal staff themself try to steal and sell on the markets.
So about 20 cases of ammo. Someone got their Black Friday sale.
What’s that worth?
That is what happens when you outsource military tasks to civilians…
20,000 rounds of undisclosed type, stolen from a trailer. This could be a tractor-trailer rig – where any theft would be from the trailer, or something smaller, where the trailer was just the easiest part of the vehicle to get into.
What type of ammo was stolen is pretty important. Mortar/artillery is a huge deal, rifle ammo is bad, but not in the same league as explosive ammo.
If the ammo was unloaded from the trailer (to a vehicle brought by thieves) this would be time-consuming, and probably not possible to move by hand if it were larger rounds (crates too heavy, requiring machinery to move). Kind of suggests small arms ammo that could be broken down and moved relatively quickly with no machinery.
If they took the whole trailer it would be a faster theft, large or small rounds. I mean, 3 or 4 people moving 20,000 rifle rounds is not gonna be all that quick.
Probably being sold to the highest bidder on the dark web. NEO NAZI groups, I shouldn’t wonder.

As a German, let me assure you that is 100% on-brand for everything related to the Bundeswehr.
Our governments are rightly spending billions of tax payer money on bullets and bombs during a cost of living crisis for our citizens.
