    1. Ironically, Castile paid a high price during the Habsburg rule in Spain, even if it became the dominant kingdom in Iberia due to that. It is a big simplification, but the cost of the European wars and the tight control of the church ensured that, over the next centuries, most of Castile became poor and the population greatly migrated to cities, inflating Madrid and other smaller cities, and leaving huge parts of the countryside virtually empty
