Well said. As like, history shouldnt be about memorizing previous stuffs. It must be about what we learnt about past mistakes of our ancestors, which LLMs would fail to answer correctly
Misuse of tech isn’t a college problem. It’s a people problem.
The only problem that college creates is not defining rules and boundaries up front to ensure those people don’t make the problems ignorantly. They can willfully do so of course, fully knowing their risk and potential failure. But the college needs to set the rules and demand adherence, simple as that.
It’s not our fault they were under prepared for AI, but they shouldn’t have been. This stuff was obvious and prevalent everywhere. Just understand what you want and lay out the rule set. Simple. Done. Then sit back and let the people attending decide if they want to adhere or waste time and money.
They said the same thing about COVID. And the Internet. And word processors with spell check. And calculators.
Scholars of old complained about those who didn’t memorize everything but relied on books and notes.
Greek philosophers railed about looking at the world rather than reasoning from abstract principles.
I mean, AI has exposed some cracks. But the biggest cracks it has exposed is how broken market valuation is and how the media can be weaponized to attack the idea of meaningful work and security so some tech bro’s can get even richer as part of breaking that valuation.
It is a time of deep reflection in universities for sure. We’re having to rethink how we evaluate. I did that. It took tens of hours for my four courses. Whatever. Done. Moved on. In some subjects it is more of a pain than in others, for sure, but that doesn’t mean it is broken in any real sense. It just needs a tune-up. Just like the last 10 times the ground rules changed.

An academic that got it right. WHod a thunk.? Your diploma WAS your ticket out of manual labor. Time to.move back to the land to have any liberty at all. Set up the solar panels and move in under them. Collect water off of them. Tend the garden share and trade with your neighbors.

Using AI for college is just Chegg with less steps. We need more open-ended assignments that encourage critical thinking. Either that or in-class assignments a la flipped classroom style.
