I always find it strange that those who are unemployed for more than 12 months get a bonus, while those unemployed for under 12 months dont.
1.5 million on benefit……I wonder how many of these pensioners are sitting on massive cash deposits in the bank?

As someone on Disability, it’s nice to get. But the reality is 90% of people will pump it straight back into the economy. My bonus will likely just go straight to the gas company this month.

Great, Christmas is hard enough on a decent salary. I’ve been lucky enough to be employed for just about all of my working life. I wouldn’t begrudge it.

The wording „bonus“ is offputting tbh. It’s a payment to people on low fixed incomes to help them with the increased costs of winter and Christmas. There’s a handful of long term dole users people might perceive as being scroungers, but the majority of people getting the payment are on very tight incomes who don’t want to be there, and I’m very happy they get a leg up at this time of year.
Should be called a „winter cost supplement“ or something.
I too would like a state bonus. Maybe a tax break for a month?
It’s hard on welfare, but its hard when you’re also in the bottom 20% of earners.
I pay so much tax and I don’t see the benefits of it. I dont get any support, no Christmas bonus and the government continue to squeeze us 🥲🥲🥲
Plenty of children get a bit of a Christmas because of this, I couldn’t begrudge it.
Just remember the percentage of those within that 1.5m who are sitting at home too lazy to get a job is very low.
Remind yourself that this money is going towards families on the breadline, who can now maybe make their children’s Christmas that little bit better. The people on disability who can maybe buy themselves something nice. The people who now have a lifeline for the ridiculous bills that are coming in.
It’s easy to point fingers and get mad, as you pay your taxes and see nothing for it, but if I sat here getting mad about some loser who won’t get a job and goes out on the piss with their bonus money, id lose my mind.
Do parents get a child benefit bonus as well, could do with it!:-)
Why didn’t Children’s allowance get a bonus this year? Meanwhile pensioners, one of the richest cohort of people in Ireland, get a bonus? Really shows that he government overwhelmingly prefers pensioners over children and working families.
Why do they need to publish this fact every year?
We know welfare recipients receive a bonus at this time of year, every year.

My partner and I are expecting our first in the next month or so, and every penny we have is going into heating the house. Keeping the place warm enough for the little one is such a worry. I work full time and she was job hunting for about 9 months before she got too pregnant, so she’s been on jobseekers for just over the year mark. We’re basically just not doing Christmas except for each other.
Vast majority of people who get the double week are in our situation rather than just lazy or conning social welfare. They’re basically a rounding error, and one that is very worthwhile for all the good the social welfare system does.
people getting real mean over these few years. this „bonus“ doesn’t reward laziness, it compensates those who have been surviving on very little for too long.
Sure, some will scam the system but the vast majority are on welfare because they have to be

Can we have a serious review of Disability Allowance. The amount of people that come before the Courts with quite serious charges and they claim their sole income is Disability Allowance.
