    1. No way 1 in 5 people in the Netherlands can have a conversation in French. Maybe order a baguette or swear at a waiter, but thats about it.

This has got to be the biggest pile of horse shit I’ve seen on reddit all day

    3. 16.5% of Britain? Is there a French enclave on the south coast that I’m unaware of?

    4. 16.5% in the UK? Absolutely not.

There is obviously a small French expat community, as well as some people from French speaking African countries, but it’s a pretty tiny share of the population. Foreign language knowledge among the general public is nowhere near that level.

This is not accurate? The majority of Belgium is flemish and the majority of Switzerland speaks German!!!!

    6. This includes people who took lessons at school, even if all they can say is „*Je voudrais un croissant, s’il vous plait*“

    7. 12% in Romania? How? I haven’t seen a single person that can speak French, and I don’t know why or how would they. The most spoken languages are definitely Romanian, English, Hungarian, Spanish, Italian, German and all the others are far below 1%.

    8. As a Brit no chance 16.5% of the population can speak French. Apart from immigrants hardly anyone can be bothered to learn a second language

    9. I guarantee you that it’s way less than 15% of Germans who can hold a conversation in French. Most people who took French in school did so for like 3-5 years max, and they’ve probably forgotten most of it.

    10. Apart from my old French teacher, who was French, I’m not sure I’ve EVER met a Brit that’s fluent in French!

Not a chance 12.7% of people in Ireland can hold a conversation in French.

    12. 16.5% of Brits maaaay be able to conduct a very brief „Hi, my name is Joe Bloggs & I am from London. Please may I have a coffee?“ type conversation, but even that feels like a stretch.

This seems like a *very* generous map. No way it’s that high.

    14. Those missing 2.5% is probably other French people not being able to hold a conversation in French with someone from Paris. I heard Paris citizens can be quite dismissive.

I went to Switzerland as a tourist and tried to speak french everywhere. Nobody spoke even a little bit of it. My conclusion was that it was only in select areas.
