I think they understand them, they just don’t often respect them.

Critics lists are overwhelmingly topped by realist dramas, and even then, in a relatively narrow sphere. When they go beyond that it’s, well, surrealism, but that largely set in our world and dream-like. You introduce fantasy and science fiction and horror and other genre tropes of the like and they threaten to bow out entirely. It’s why so many of them aren’t respected till later on, including classics like 2001.

Critics understand them fine. Awards bodies for the most part don’t with a few exceptions.

You can see this on Rotten Tomatoes. Almost every sci-fi movie gets panned by the critics and lauded by the audience. It’s how I know it’s going to be a good movie.

I think it speaks to what kinda person someone is. To compare and contrast, a sci-fi fan probably cares a lot more about what’s going on on the planet and wants to get tf off this rock.

Meanwhile, an action fan thats into John Wick and Diehard, won’t be interested at all. They’d prefer a smaller story thats more linear. Maybe a not so expansive world.

The scale and interest is just a lot to take in.

    6. I would say they don’t enjoy watching them. I know I don’t, but many do. It would be guard for a reviewer to give a good review when they don’t particularly like the genre.
