Speaking in the north-eastern town of Mirecourt on Friday, French President Emmanuel Macron said he had asked his government to draw up proposals for new summary proceedings that could be used when defamatory or harmful claims spread across social networks.
The aim, he said, is to have a mechanism firmly anchored in French legislation “as soon as possible”.
The French leader revealed that he had convened a defence council dedicated to “information warfare”, tasking officials with completing their work by the end of the year
It forms part of a broader campaign to tackle what Paris sees as an escalation in hostile foreign propaganda, particularly from Russia since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022
Macron and his wife, Brigitte, have themselves been persistent targets of online conspiracy theories – most notably the baseless claim that the First Lady was born male.
The couple say such attacks have taken a personal toll, with the president admitting he has faced online harassment and that Brigitte has endured “even more”.
“We are completely powerless,” he told regional press. “It takes an enormous amount of time, it continues, people see it, and there are those who are foolish enough to believe it is true. And that undermines you.”
Just had to make it personal to him for disinformation to suddenly become a national problem, it’s not like it has been disruptive for years
In other words, allow immediate censorship of anything contradicting the party line.
I expect a lot of people who identify themselves as on the right or far right will be posting „Nooooooo! We must allow misinformation!“, but in the end, it is a weapon being used against western societies, and it needs to be stopped somehow, even if that way isn’t perfect.
Who determines what disinformation is?
Can the people not think for themselves? Why not focus on teaching critical thinking?
Finally we need to fight back against the disinformation make it illegal.

Standards for media aren’t new, Standards for media already exist. We should have done something about blatant lies and racism a long time ago but now is a start. In fact if we don’t do anything about this accounts on Russia, India, Africa, Asia are gonna have more control over narratives in our own countries than we do. As is currently the case by the way.

Macron has no majority, no budget, no army, no industry … but he speaks a lot.

Idk, I still believe in freedom of the press, but something does have to be done about sites like x pushing nonsense on the uneducated. Social media censorship? While other sites can post whatever they want? You should at least have to go to some crackpot website to get your crackpot news. Community note blockage? Idk.
You can make a decent case for taking foreign disinfo seriously, especially around elections, but “rapid blocking” laws always end up as “the state + platforms decide what’s true under time pressure.” That means overblocking, zero transparency, and effectively turning intermediaries into a political speech police.
Who defines what is misinformation?
I hate that the world becomes more authoritarian by the day.
This is a disgusting law, and people who are cheering this on won’t see the snake coming that will bite them eventually.
