German here: When the company installed new fiber optic cables where I used to live a couple years ago, they also offered them to the apartment building. The owners‘ association, made up of a bunch of pensioners, rejected the offer because we „already have a telephone cable.“ So we were stuck with the old 16k copper line.

Ireland has **all** the internet cables going through it. Why is it so… bland.

Surfing with my 4G, it took a while for the picture to load! I’m downloading a steam game as I scroll reddit, admittedly.

Bulgaria government is corrupt and „slow responders „, but letting internet freedom exist, let us survive in the digital age.

I don’t see the point of some super fast connection. I am paying 5 euro for 100mbit/s in Bulgaria. After the first year it will be 8 euro. The high speed connections are way more expensive.

Utterly unlimited data here, and very cheap generally, but you’ll get 5G displayed and bizarrely low speeds like not unusual to see less than 30mbit/s in the middle of cities. I think it’s a mixture of overloaded networks due to the vast amount of data being used, and probably throttling.

The networks here also don’t seem to compete on speed and basically just lie about 5G being fast. I’ve never once seen them give a speed reference just keep talking about 5G that’s often not any faster than 4G

Idk where you got 90 in Poland. I get 50 max in Warsaw on 5g. In malls it drops to 0.1

I just did one myself on their website, with 5G in Spain, and it gave me 330 Mbps.

Bulgaria is kinda surprising. It is like if Africa would have would have the fastest fiber out of all of the continents.

Another German here: Many years ago we had a minister for Postal Services from the CDU. When it came to a point to decide if Germany should introduce fibre optics and abandon copper cables, he decided to go for the copper. Choosing fibre optics would have catapulted Germany to the front of modernisation of the communication sector in the whole world. Turned out his family was investing in copper companies.

Also: Many apartment buildings have „build in“ cable tv connections. That’s how you also could get your internet. Up to a two years ago if you were a tennent in such an apartment you had to pay for the cable tv company, no matter if you used their service or not. So one of course wouldn’t pay for another service provider, even if it was fibre optics and even if it was faster. And thus companies did not put fibre optic cables into the ground in those districts. I live in such an apartment, quit my cable tv contract as soon as it was possibel (never used it anyway) but kept the internet. It is not the fastest, but ok for my use case. Only a few weeks ago someone finally brought fibre optics to this district, but for me its too expensive for what it changes.

Currently in Germany and can’t tell you enough how perplexed I was trying to use my mobile data for the most mundane things here compared to Croatia.

In Italy with Vodafone I pay 26€ per month for optical connection. In WiFi from to my mobile phone 450/500 Mbps download 300 in upload ping 22. According to Ookla speed test.

Romania, orange, 217. Just tested now.

Median download speeds on mobile is a terrible metric; worse connection with few users in the area gets better results than downtown in a major city with higher quality connection available.
