    1. The award-winning British playwright and screenwriter Tom Stoppard has died, according to his talent agency United Agents. He was 88.

Stoppard, who was born in Czechoslovakia, most recently won the 2023 Tony Award for his play “Leopoldstadt.” Stoppard was perhaps best known in the US for his Oscar-winning screenplay for the 1998 film “Shakespeare in Love,” which he co-wrote with Marc Norman.

“We are deeply saddened to announce that our beloved client and friend, Tom Stoppard, has died peacefully at home in Dorset, surrounded by his family,” United Agents said in a statement posted to its website.

    2. I watched that movie literally yesterday! I had a yen, and a hangover from Thanksgiving, so we put on Shakespeare In Love. And it was totally brilliant as it always is.

What a loss, but also what a great contribution Stoppard made to the theater and films. A non-pareil talent of epic proportions.

We move into anew era, as the minds and talent of the 20th Century leave the 21st to its own.

Those few of us remaining can either look on in regret and disbelief, or continue to mentor and encourage the young and talented of those willing to forge ahead.
