In a warehouse in the Swedish city of Malmö, 2260 jars of Nutella are being stored. The jars cannot be sold and they cannot be disposed of. The reason is that their origin is unclear. A Swedish law also requires the contents to be removed before packaged food can be thrown away. Yet the environmental authority has neither the staff nor the equipment to empty the jars.
The city of Malmö has confirmed that this is an unusual case. The jars were discovered back in the summer of 2024 during a food inspection. At the time, the inspectors were actually looking for other products. The origin of the Nutella jars could never be clarified, which is why selling them is out of the question.
Since the beginning of 2024, Sweden has had a law that strictly regulates the disposal of packaged food. The contents have to be removed before anything can be thrown away. Getting every last bit out of a jar of Nutella takes a lot of effort, and the authority is not equipped for that.

Do they have community service in Sweden? When someone has committed a crime but doesnt need to go to prison, but instead does something for the community/public.

You can enslave children, you can illegaly extract and sell organs from unwilling people, you can delete all human rights.
But this is way over the line of human decency.
All you need is a spatula, a dishwasher, and allowing 30 seconds to scoop the majority of the contents, about 20 hours work.

If it cannot be sold as food, it is not food and regulations for food container disposal don’t apply.

I wish my country had this as a scandal.
This is the Nutella seed bank that is meant to revitalize the Nutella crop in the event of catastrophic devastation. I am happy that Sweden has prioritized this. Priorities must be maintained.
They certainly can’t rely on the Danes to save Nutella stock.

In 200 years archeologists will unearth these and wonder about the cultural significance of these.
Clearly they were meant as tribute to the old swede’s god Nutella.
