    1. The fact that Crater Lake used to be a mountain that was 12,000 ft tall is insane. Seeing it go down must have been quite something.

    2. Weird, I’ve strangely been to all of the ones in the lower 48. Had no idea they were the deepest. If you’d asked, I would’ve guessed superior was the deepest – at least in the lower 48.

and Christie Bay of Great Slave Lake in Canada’s NWT beats them all…

    4. I thought all of the Great Lakes were all deep? Am I remembering wrong and they’re actually shallow for how big they are? Or are the other 3 in the top 20? Haha

Crater Lake – When considering the mean, or average depth of lakes, Crater Lake becomes the deepest lake in the Western Hemisphere and the third-deepest in the world. Crater Lake Institute Director and limnologist Owen Hoffman states that „Crater Lake is the deepest, when compared on the basis of average depth among lakes whose basins are entirely above sea level. The average depths of Lakes Baikal and Tanganyika are deeper than Crater Lake; however, both have basins that extend below sea level.“
