It’s true the world has changed. The global temperature is even higher than it was when Guilbault joined the government, and we remain poised to blow past the safety mark, which is going to have existential impacts on the economy and way of life in Canada.
Feels like folks should be alarmed but apparently this is a nothing burger and the number one most important issue for this government to spend its political capital on is ensuring that we can pump moar oil to light on fire and help make this planet burn faster.
I respect Guilbeault a lot for this – resigning a cabinet position on a point of principle is grimly very rare in this day and age.
There’s been a media onslaught against him since the day he got elected to parliament, a lot of people the strongly believe that someone from the environmental movement who believes in climate action as strongly as he is should have no place in government or politics.
The world has changed, China has taken on the climate leadership mantle with their massive investment in renewable energies and exporting tech to emerging countries. Don’t believe that Canada and the western world have any appetite or desire to actually take climate change seriously
Two people on opposite sides of an issue can both end up being proven right. Too often we draw premature conclusions about policies. There is no guarantee that large O&G investments will pan out. Oil price forecasts are grim right now. There may also come a time when the rest of the world starts viscerally experiencing the effects of climate change (i.e. famine, displacement, war; often in that order), surviving and remembering the people who helped drive us into the ditch.
Global security and Canadian sovereignty are also important issues. Militaries run on natural resources, heavy industry, infrastructure, and energy. If we don’t want to be bullied or invaded, we need to not look like the weakest kid in the schoolyard. I wish the paradigm was different and that we were more evolved as a species to be able to conceptualize our deep interconnected, down to every single human being, but we are not in that world. We live in a world of desperate need, fear and religion. That is not a world conducive to peace.
Is a balancing of those things in our policies realistic? Is it ideal? Or will one of those two prove to be a more accurate trajectory for our country and species? Nobody knows this. And it’s why people acting in good faith are sometimes hard to discern from those acting in bad faith. The occurrences of positive and negative ramifications can also be decades or centuries apart.
Hard to blame him if the rumours are true that the [PMO effectively lied to Guilbeault](https://globalnews.ca/news/11548738/guilbeault-resignation-timeline/) and used him to get May onside for the budget vote.
We have to be pragmatic given the current situation in the world, but the Liberal idea of „the world has changed“ seems to mirror that of many European parties on the left. You repeatedly throw progressives under the bus in favour of right wing policy, and then you pray like hell that they come back and vote for you when polls show an extreme right wing party will smoke you.
