They’re not banned from phones, email, texting, writing, cb radios, mesh networks, etc.

They’re banned from public sites which contain unregulated bullshit because they don’t have the life experience to separate fact from fiction. But then, neither do a lot of adults.

If only there was still a way to communicate outside of social media….

I don’t think this is going to fly either. There are many other (and frankly, better) options for communication. There’s nothing stopping them from making discord servers for themselves and their friends, for example, along with the other examples other people have given in this thread.

It is a very restrictive law, it is good to test it in court.

I would rather see the social media companies more regulated than access to cultural and political exchange indiscriminately limited to adults.

if they are doing this then they need to ban seniors because they high risk fo falling for propaganda and scams.

I saw a social media feed on Reddit yesterday showing a teenager watching a gas pump pouring out gas all over the gas station, not knowing how to turn off the gas which she has left laying on the concrete. She lifts up
The pump off the concrete, is spraying gasoline everywhere while whining to her friend, “I don’t know how to turn it offff-uh”. She’s standing in the middle of this river of gasoline while her friend records all of it laughing maniacally. Truly a tragic moment. My 20-year old daughter saw it and said “What the actual heck?! Is this real?!! I fear for my future if she’s able to vote. Kudos for her actually making it to this age though.. unless there was more after the video and neither one made it”.

Teenagers need to talk face to face more… People might start getting laid again

Social media can be harmful for children but there are absolutely ways to tackle the issue without introducing technical frameworks that necessitate handing over your ID or having your face scanned.

The reality of the matter is that this is just the current global political desire to censor the internet as a whole masquerading as “Think of the children”.

It’s no coincidence that at a time of increased political strife multiple countries and international bodies are suddenly clamouring for systems that require you to hand over personal data to barely regulated third parties that serve to form a connection between you and what you do online.

You don’t have the right to communicate in a place owned by someone else in a way they don’t like. I can kick you out of my house if you say you hate gay people for example.

Here in the US, everyone has first amendment rights. Adults and minors. This was explained in the landmark case Brown v. Entertainment Merchants when they were going after video games to „save the kids“.

I think everyone should be able to access legal protected forms of speech and expression and the government should have no control.

I hope these kids win but I disagree with UK speech laws.

First off, I want to say that I am totally against blanket bans like this.

Maybe we should make parents to actually, I don’t know, be parents instead of having a nanny state.

Second, does anyone actually believe that two 15-year olds could pull their heads out of puberty long enough to consider legal constitutional issues and hire lawyers?

The “Digital Freedom Project” that these children represent appears to consist of the two of them and one extremely conservative Australian politician. This whole crusade is a farce, and possibly a grift. Shocking how little the majority of commentators have looked into this. Social media is absolutely inappropriate and often quite harmful for children to be engaging in. As long as parents are unable or unwilling to intervene, Albanese and his government are making the correct decision here.
