If this is even a little bit true it is a nightmare. NAVSEA has had to redesign ships because leadership didn’t think they looked “lean and mean” enough. These new vanity Coast Guard has even less juice for a push-back.
These new vanity constraints interfere with constraints driven by real needs and result in A) a lot of expensive rework, and B) an inferior design.
So it is possible that Trump saw an artist’s rendition and ordered changes. It is also possible that CG leadership acted on them. If so, the class will be delayed, the cost went up by millions, and for the next 80 years sailors will be stuck with operating less capable ships.
