Freedom of religion isn’t the same as freedom from religion.
This will likely face major legal challenges as it seems to violate the Canadian charter of rights and freedoms. Which guarantees all Canadians freedom of religion.
Edit: in case it’s necessary, I’m an atheist, this isn’t support or refuting the bill, just saying it’ll face legal challenges.

So, myself and a group of friends go to a park and decide, not forcing anyone to participate, to have a little prayer. That would be punishable?

Religion will always actively encroach upon the state by its very nature. A secular state must present an equal and opposite force to maintain equilibrium or be eroded over time.

Looks like it’s because they used public prayer as a work around for the permit requirements for protests.

The Catholic Church was an arm of government in Quebec until the 70s. If they want to keep going on secularism all the power to them.

I’ll believe it’s not xenophobia when they start closing Catholic schools. Maybe take down that 30 meter cross on Mount Royal.

I’m literally an anti-theist (not simply an atheist…like I literally despise religion and actively hope and promote its end)…
…I’m also a liberal. As such, I’m completely against the idea of oppressing people for being religious. Whether it’s believing in God or being a Yankees fan, everyone should have the right to freely express themselves, no matter how stupid or wrong they are.
All that said, the bill doesn’t actually appear like North Korea levels here. It seems to only really target events of a size that would be considered as co-opting a space, as such it would/should be treated as other events that would co-opt a space (like say throwing a large party or a rally of some kind)

So this is a form of Laïcité I read about?

Fucking christ. I can’t imagine being so bigoted that I would be upset by the mere sight of someone of a different religion.

This looks like to be another excuse to oppress Muslims.
