Well, there goes all hopes for the console.
If you can buy a better gaming PC for the price then I assume more people will.
BG3 boss is the new Albert Einstein of wisdom, if someone said something smart, 99% it was him /s
Valve confirms thing that was said in every article since this thing was announced…
Dude I can get a pc right now for 500$ that’s better than 70% of what people have.
What they want is to sell to technology illiterate people…
It’s because Steam is greedy. They don’t believe in loss leaders, why would they? Their fans are die-hard. They don’t care. These are the same people who look at EGS and go „haha shitty store can’t even win giving free games“.
They don’t need a loss leader, because hardware like this already implicitly entrenches it’s users into steam/valve. Why have a loss leader when you can sell hardware for profit, and take 30% on every game that is sold on the platform. it’s win-win for steam.
Users could just build their own PC and get the same thing for cheaper/better probably. But they would have to use standard form factor components and not something that has limited upgradability and budget components.
Edit: People who don’t think Valve is greedy. Gaben is laughing at you from his fleet of yachts and his place in the top 0.0001% of society, while you pay more for games than you have to, because you know these yachts don’t fuel themselves. Staffing a yacht costs money right? Money consumers spend that doesn’t go to game producers or development, but personal goals of the founder.
Well, there goes me buying a Steam Machine… twas a good dream tho
How dare a company *checks notes* make a profit!
The alternative is to sell at a loss and normal consumers aren’t able to buy them because companies will snatch them up.
I mean if someone can sell at loss, is Valve because of how much money they make out of steam alone. This machine may be great if priced correctly, at least for a TV main room setup or something. But oh well, I’m not the target audience for this anyway.
If it is a full working pc they need to sell it at a pc price cuz otherwise regular people are gonna buy their pc cheaper than the market value of its parts and use for home use or buy In bulk for companies, and then the money that they lost for making it cheaper so people buy their games is gonna be lost in the market of people who are not gonna buy games. It’s not even about being greedy its about not making a piece of hardware that you loose money when you sell it and don’t make it back.
For me personally that only pushes me to wait for a year or two, if the rumours are correct the next xbox will be be exactly this but also be able to play xbox games
They might even subsidise it to lower the price like with normal consoles
Forget Ja Rule. I need a Larian developer to tell me their thoughts on what’s happening.
its because their sales model is the reverse of consoles – they dont need people to buy their device at a loss in order to drive them to their store – they already have people already there and paying in the store – PC gamers. So they can widen their target market and *still make profit* on the devices, at least in terms of the console market.
I am so done with Windows that if it isn’t egregious, I’ll heavily consider it.
every week I see an article with „larian lead x says y about z“
Do business people consider breaking even selling at a loss?
Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t one of the engineers say that one of the main reasons was to not cannibalise sales if other manufacturers had their steam machines on sale in the market?
I guess they want this to be what the original steam machines were not.
Why is the Larian publishing lead the Ja Rule of the gaming space. Dude has an article on every gaming topic
If the machine is cheaper than if you were to buy similar parts yourself, then I don’t see why they should sell at a loss.
If it can function like a normal computer with a bit of finagling, then it could still be a decent upgrade for a chunk of people. This is without considering the people who will get this for their living rooms.
Valve couldn’t sell a full consumer pc for a loss, people would buy them en mass for stuff then never play a game on them
I was really hoping for something like the board from the steam deck put into new housing for TV use. I thought a move like that was a no brainer for them to scoop up the low end market since it would be even cheaper to produce than an actual steak deck.
I want them to succeed and bring more console exclusive gamers into the broader pc gaming world.
I don’t see how pricing it more expensive than a console would do that. Most console gamers will view it as a more expensive console. Many existing PC gamers won’t buy an additional machines especially one that is inferior to their current PC.
I wonder how this will play out with the enormous jump in RAM prices…..
How would that model even work for steam? I’m sure they have enough income from the store to eat a loss like that, but to recoup those losses? There are so many games on steam that I doubt the game sales you’d get from people who aren’t already PC gaming buying steam machines would cover things. It’s also a fully function PC and not a locked down console – if it was sold at a loss it would end up being incredibly good value as a general use home or even work PC and steam would eat a loss with no gain on those sales.
If it was being sold at a loss it would immediately be used for some research or manufacturing setting and not make anything up on the game side of things.
Remember when a boat load of PS3’s were used for a military super computer? That is what would happen.
It’s what Nintendo does: make money on the console.
Because it’s not a locked down console. If they sell the hardware at a loss other companies could buy it by the truck load and cause issues. If it’s not locked down you can’t perform the same “market capture” consoles do where you know you can make back the difference. The steam deck is more niche than a regular old 3L desktop with decent hardware.
Okay.
Why should I care what a random game dev has to say about a gaming platform’s price?
They never said it was going to be a console, hype and hysteria made everyone think it was going to be a console. If they wanted it to be a console there would be 100 times more fanfare.
They don’t want to make the mistake that Sony did of subsidizing supercomputers at a loss to themselves with the current demands from AI and crypto.
Yeah, tell valve how they are bad at making money…
Who the hell cares what this dude has to say about anything not Larian related. Appreciate you for that masterpiece and all but this isn’t a console pushing exclusive games, it’s a specialized PC.
If they sold for a loss non gamers would just buy them to use them as PCs.
the steam machine isn’t just priced like a Pc it IS a pc. It cones pre installed with steamOS but so could any other PC.
It’s not peculiar.
They want competition to build competing machines because they want SteamOS to be used by gamers over windows. They are trying to do an android long term plan
