I mean Sliwa was the only Republican on the ballot, it’s not surprising that a lot of Republicans felt he was the closest to their political beliefs. I think it’s much more bizarre that almost 70% of self-described MAGA voters were actually willing to vote for a Democrat because Trump told them to.

Exit polls have all sorts of validity issues, esp bc of collector bias in selecting interviewees, but social desirability, the desire to manipulate the results is also present in respondents.

I once had a conversation with a dude at a bar who was wearing a Trump shirt, and had just come from a Trump rally. I asked if he was going to vote, and he said no. I asked why, and he said, „I don’t want to have to vote for Trump.“ Politics is weird and unpredictable.

This is not at all surprising. Presumably much the 11% of democratic socialists who voted for Cuomo did so because they thought Mamdani doesn’t have the experience or the character for the role. Presumably the 8% of MAGA who voted for Mamdani did so because they hate Cuomo, but still wanted to vote for a candidate that has a chance of winning. And the 29% who voted for Sliwa were presumably doing so because they knew he couldn’t win, but could not bring themselves to vote for either Mamdani or Cuomo given their policies are anathema to a MAGA republicans.

Mamdani, and the left wing of the Democratic party in general, has a lot more to do to convince Jewish Americans that they are not anti-semitic.

I’m not that familiar with Sliwa, but isn’t his reputation sort of law-and-order? That alone would probably make him more attractive than the other two, particularly if he has any other non-leftist positions.

I’ve only seen a few clips of Sliwa but this doesn’t surprise me, he comes across as a big brash personality like Trump and I think most MAGA people are just emotionally driven and easily persuaded, they don’t really bother with the actual principles behind anything

actually I dont find it too shocking. part of voting is a herd or team mentality where people will vote with the team no matter what regardless of how counterintuitive it is.

Curtis Sliwa is very much aligned with MAGA philosophy, so his spat with Trump was likely taken with a big ol grain of salt by voters.
But I think this shows the reality of a complex electorate. we’re used to talking about politics in terms of Red.and Blue while also discussing only the reactions of a marginal group of undecided voters in a handful of swing states. But a social democrat who nonetheless believes that Cuomo would be more effective than Mamdani is hardly difficult to imagine.
