      It’s reached a point where roblox might have to be forced shut down due to repeated failures to protect children on the site

      I have been here myself, and found stuff on my 12 year olds pc in the kitchen and phone, and was convinced to link on another platform by a suspected groomer. Luckily, i found it early.

      We’ll look back on allowing children completely unsupervised internet access like allowing 12 year olds to smoke in the 50s.

      I feel pretty lucky that we didn’t have home broadband until i was 17.

      Having full access to the Internet as a child / teen seems like a bad idea.

      Honestly this doesn’t surprise me Roblox looks kid-friendly but it’s basically a massive social platform with no proper age checks, so kids can easily end up chatting with strangers. If your children use it, the simplest move is to sit with them for a few minutes and lock down chat, friend requests and invites; the controls aren’t perfect but they help. Fair play to the Garda cybercrime unit for calling it out, because these companies only seem to act when they’re publicly shamed. Until then, assume these platforms aren’t safe by default, no matter how colourful they look.

      I honestly don’t understand why the platform hasn’t just blocked the ability to chat and send friend requests to people who aren’t age verified, the age should be 16+ to use the chat.

      Also parents if you let your kid on Roblox, you can disable the chat and friend request ability.

      It’s not just your kids either you’ve to worry about what others kids are doing.
      My child’s only social media was WhatsApp with their few friends. But one of the friends talks to strangers on Roblox and then adds them into the chat giving god knows who access to a group of young teens. So now WhatsApp is also off the table because my teen kept it hidden to protect their friend. The friend group is largely neurodivergent and I’d say more naive and a bit vulnerable to this stuff. It’s so tough to navigate while also trying not to alienate your child when everyone else seems to be allowed unlimited access to everything.

      Roblox has long been known for allowing predatory actions on its games, From grooming to financial abuse of minors. They’ve been told time and time again.

      I was born in 1999. When I was in primary school my parents wouldn’t let me get Facebook until I was 13. I got an iPad for Christmas when I was 12 and downloaded this new photo app called instagram that I read about in a magazine. I fall down a rabbit hole of eating disorder content. I feel the effects of this to this day.

      Few years later, Facebook finally admits that it knew about the harm instagram was doing teenage girls. But it doesn’t matter because teenage girls are abandoning instagram for TikTok. Parents think TikTok is a kesha song. By the time they realise that TikTok is turning their kids’ brains to mush, TikTok is old news. Apparently they’re all playing on Roblox now.

      Kids will always be one step ahead of their out of touch parents. We need a more proactive approach to this stuff.

      As a parent of a 12 and 9 year old its so hard to keep up. They dont have social media and it’s not just with Roblox. You have to watch out for so much. I ended up paying a yearly subscription for a parental control tool. Which has helped a lot and flagged a few bogey apps and games.

      „games“ is too vague, there’s nobody being groomed playing Expedition 33, but loads of kids are getting groomed on Roblox. This is like saying „videos“ are harmful whilst lumping in nature documentaries with rape porn.

      There is a cult named ‘764’ and they target children to do really disturbing things like suicide and self harm on video for their sadistic gratification.
