I don’t understand what Carney has to gain by effectively caving to Danielle Smith. The LPC hold 2 seats in Alberta, and even when Trudeau tried catering to Alberta with a pipeline, it got him nowhere in the province. And, doing this creates caucus unrest in a minority government, both with BC MPs and more left/environmental leaning MPs. Alberta voters are permanently ungrateful and will never reward a LPC federal government.
I think he would be far better off icing Alberta out of all major federal infrastructure projects and discussions until voters there have some common sense and put in a more reasonable and acceptable premier.
It’s not sustainable. The prosperity of oil is entirely due to global factors out of Ottawa’s control. Albertans romanticize the Harper years when oil was selling at $100 USD a barrel, all until Saudi Arabia decided to turn on the taps to pump out more oil, so the price went down. Albertans can have all the pipelines they want, and still be at the mercy of OPEC dictating prices.
I implore advocates of oil and gas to look into the case study of Detroit’s auto sector, of what happens when you put all your eggs in one basket on a single commodity, without diversifying your economy to offset the losses. All these years could have been better spent transitioning towards a more diversified economy instead of fighting Ottawa.
But here’s the pragmatic case for the pipeline that I urge LPC progressives to consider: it’s the only way the Albertan government will shut up about it. Give them their pipeline. They will probably still be ungrateful about it, and Poilievre will still huff and puff because only the CPC can save Alberta from the evil federal Liberals. It’s not in their interest for the LPC to help Alberta because it goes against their brand all these years.
Still, any Liberal MP considering to leave caucus over this, don’t. The LPC needs progressive voices to continue to push for more balanced policies. Carney won’t be Liberal leader forever, and you’re probably one of the few voices he’ll listen to, to keep him from shifting the LPC even further right. Air your grievances to him, then think of the bigger picture, because your replacement will probably just be a yes man. The last thing the LPC needs, is to be filled with yes men.
