I guess same way he wasn’t sued for his god awful portrayal of Bruce Lee.

    2. He’s not wrong and more people should see Battle Royale but they all borrowed from The Running Man a little bit.

Because kids killing each other on an island was derivative when *Lord of the Flies* was published. It’s a little late in the game to be pissing and moaning about it now.

Also, why does he give a shit?

    4. Ah yes. Quintin Tarantino, a true original who has never worn his inspiration on his sleeve in any of the movies he’s ever made.

When I’m finished laughing, I’m gonna go watch City on Fire so I can start laughing again.

I’m not sure there’s a director out there whose work I enjoy *this much* whose opinion on movies I have absolutely no respect for.

This guy dedicated two episodes of his podcast to interviewing one of his fictional characters to celebrate thri fictional filmography, and he talked just as passionately for three fucking hours about those non existent movies as he does about the stupid bullshit he wants you to watch.

West Side Story (remake) and Jackass? He’s trolling us with these lists. And they change constantly.

    7. That can’t be a real Tarantino quote

About 70% of his material is just ripping off other stufff

    8. Why am I hearing so much from him lately. Is it because of Kill Bill’s re-release next week and the upcoming Fortnite collab?

    9. Nothing-Is-Real-Here on

Meanwhile Tarantino just did a collab with Fortnite that sky rocketed to fame for having a battle royale mode.

I’m sorry but people don’t own concepts in storytelling. Otherwise Tarantino himself should get sued for half of his filmography. Anybody making a zombie movie who isn’t Romero should be sued to hell. Come on dude.

I’m sure if there were more feet shots he’d be singing a different tune

    11. Probably because the plots are very different and if you’re the kind of reductivist dummy who makes up the user base of TV Tropes then there’s never been an „original story,“ Quentin?

    12. Yeah, and The Long Walk (novella) predates Battle Royale (book) by decades. Kids competing to the death is not a new story concept. Edit: I don’t know if Lord of the Flies is first in the kids killing each other genre, but the point is that it is not new. This is also fucking rich coming from Tarantino who is often inspired by other movies.

Something something Lord of the Flies?

This is one of those exhausting pedantic things that Cinephiles love to trot out when you pull the string on their back. Yeah we’ve heard it. We also heard the same thing about The Hidden Forteess and Star Wars, Perfect Blue and Black Swan (with the added trivia you get when you pull the string again and they tell you that Aronofsky bought the rights, etc., etc. to use the shot because he loves him, etc. etc). Like let it go bro.

I’ve never been a fan of this surface level comparison. Sure they have a similar premise, but I think both movies definitely focus on different themes. Battle Royale does not encompass at all that vibe of “reality tv gone very very wrong” that I think is unique to Hunger Games’ context.

    15. Yeah… why didn’t Melvin Van Peebles, Jack Hill and Roger Corman sue Tarantino out of everything he owns?

    16. Major_R_Soul on

Because it’s not Battle Royale Quentin. It’s a Battle Royale…with *cheese*

    17. Resident_Course_3342 on

He’s not wrong, battle Royale was better by every metric. Wish it had ended on Kitano doing the exercises though.

    18. Eman_Drawkcab_X on

Lady Snowblood would like a word about copying other films, Quentin.

    19. Adept-Watercress-378 on

I mean I agree that hunger frames ripped of battle royale. But hunger games evolved into more, imo and became its own thing after the first movie.

FYI: I am apathetic to Hunger Games

    20. MuddaFrmAnnudaBrudda on

Battle Royale is a far superior book/film to the Hunger Games. Not even in the same league.

    21. QT continues to make great movies that I grew up with and love, QT continues to cry about nothing

    22. The only similarity is that children are forced to fight each other. Everything else is different.

    23. DoubleUnlikely9789 on

he’s mad at someone stealing? I just wanna post the intro to the Japanese film Boyguard or something hahah.

    24. Tony_Banksy on

Ripping off old school movies is literally Tarantino’s style. He has admitted it over the years. He will say it’s paying homage but it’s basically the same thing.

    25. Never seen any of the Hunger Games films, but saw Battle Royale before. It’s a total rip off.

    26. How did he not get sued by John Carpenter for ripping off “The Thing” by making “The Hateful Eight”?

    27. ParsleySlow on

That’s just QT – he gets prodded because he’s always good for a headline quote. He seems a bit of a dick, but we don’t have to pretend because of that that several of his films aren’t good films.

    28. They both have the “battle royale/fight to the death” theme, but they’re not even that similar other than that

    29. CalculonsPride on

Almost everything is based off everything at this point in cinematic history. Get over it.

    30. bluehawk232 on

I don’t consider it a ripoff but i do consider it a safe and neutered version of the concept. It’s a fight to the death games but PG13 violence

    31. RedGeneral28 on

Takami said he was partially inspired by The Long Work. King said he was partially inspired by The Lottery. Jackson was inspired by something else, probably. Not to mention all that IRL stuff that obviously influenced all of them. So Quentin should chill tf out.

    32. Revolutionary_Sun946 on

Says the guy who pretty much ripped off „Lady Snowblood“ for Kill Bill.
