Follow up question—Does this differentiate between brothels and prostitution as a whole? And if so, how different is that map?

I don’t think they are legal in Spain. There are a ton of them, but from what I heard from my Spanish friends they have found some loophole to keep open.

Brothels are illegal in Brazil, but like, they exist anyways and cops love them (prostitution itself is legal).

The rest of the US needs to catch up with Nevada here.
They used to be very common, especially out in the Western states.

It should be noted that even then, it’s only certain counties in Nevada (and surprisingly, none of the ones that the Las Vegas Strip is located in).

I feel like they are legal in both Japan and Canada?
I live in Canada and they call them massage parlors and as long as they pay their taxes I really don’t think the Canadian government cares.

Definitely illegal in Argentina. Law 12331 article 15: „Queda prohibido en toda la República el establecimiento de casas o locales donde se ejerza la prostitución, o se incite a ella.“
Of course, there are brothels disguised as bars and such, but they are not legal.

Prostitution itself is mostly not illegal in Mexico, but negative related activities like pimping, human trafficking, or sexual exploitation of minors are criminal. Some states require sex workers to register and undergo health checks.
The legality of brothels depends on state or municipal law. In some places, like Mexico City, they can operate legally with permits and regulations. In other states, brothels are banned, but individual sex work is allowed.
Even sex workers can have a Bienestar social healthcare card, but that doesn’t give them labor protections, social security, or unemployment benefits. The card just lets them access government subsidies or programs.
Regarding taxes, most don’t pay income tax formally, unless they register as independent workers or the brothel declares them as employees …. which I think is uncommon.

It’s physically safer for the girls and helps stop the spread of diseases. Some may find the practice itself distasteful, but it’s better than street walking prostitution, which has literally existed since the dawn of time.

In Denmark prostitution is legal but it’s not legal to make a profit on others prostituting themselves. So in theory a brothel could be legal in the right set up but in practice it almost never is.

I’m really surprised to see Germany & Turkey in Green. I think only one city in Australia has legalised brothel-prostitution.
England is in a weird place when it comes to brothels. They exist in many large and medium sized cities and aren’t usually that difficult to spot existing on main roads. While on paper brothels may be illegal as long as their are no complaints or police action and they pay their business rates and taxes they are allowed to continue operating as „massage parlours“. It’s very weird but only because the law and social beliefs maybe outdated.
