They should have them. Nice deterrent against China’s goals of expansion into Japan, Australia, California, Indonesia and British Colombia (Canada). Japan already purchased Tomahawk Missiles(2023) that have a range of 2500km. They’re expected to be in service by March 2026.They can be modified to carry nuclear bombs. Wouldn’t be hard for the Japanese to do. Plus having them in Tokyo, Osaka, or even Fukuoka allows Japan to Nuke Beijing with ease. All 3 are less than 2500km away from Beijing.

Delulu if you think China won’t be launching strikes, even possible tactical nuclear strikes on all nuclear power plants, submarines bases and missile production facilities in Japan the minute concrete steps are taken towards this. After all, the US established the precedent with Iraq WMDs and those weren’t even real. The only problem I see with China’s retaliation is that their nuclear posture is primarily counter-value not counter-force. So they might be forced to use 100kt+ strategic level warheads if they go nuclear in an immediate response since they simply don’t have the arsenal of tactical level nukes readily available.

Japan can absolutely have a nuclear deterrent, and it makes total sense. They’re surrounded by three nuclear-armed states — China, Russia, and North Korea — and China has spent decades helping North Korea build missiles and submarines. That’s not theory, that’s reality.

This isn’t about aggression. It’s about survival. Japan has the industrial base, the scientific expertise, and the strategic position to make deterrence credible. Reviewing or hosting nuclear deterrence doesn’t mean planning a war; it means making sure any attack on them carries consequences.

Legally, strategically, and practically, Japan defending itself is rational. Anyone claiming otherwise is ignoring geography, law, and the obvious asymmetry in the region.
