      I feel like this is a large reason Steam couldn’t announce price on their new PC. They may have produced stock with already purchased memory but almost certainly not enough stock to announce a price they can stick to.

      It will be especially interesting to find out how long until the big 3 consoles burn through their stocks to need to do another price increase.

      Datacenters are using up drinking water and overloading power grids, Sam Altman has fucked over every technology company not named OpenAI for years to come, the coming tech crash is going to drag down economies worldwide… AI is going to be the downfall of civilization after all, just in a manner no sci-fi writer anticipated.

      Already seeing it big time. I was looking at the prices of the kit I built 6 months ago, and the price of the RAM alone is now > 1/3 the price of the entire system.

      I got 2 x16 Crucial pro 32gb Ram sticks for about $50 earlier in the year. Now amazons got options for $225-$300.

      Theyre building data centers across half of the U.S. Each data center has billions of dollars behind it. Many countries the world over are doing the same thing. It’ll be a couple years before everything levels out.

      I hope this AI bubble bursts in a huge way. Keeping integrating it into the medical industry and all the useful stuff, but it’d be great if this everyday AI use bullshit just disappeared.

      If China catches up on manufacturing high end technology, will affordability return? Low stock, overpriced tech and scalpers has gone on way too long. It sometimes feels like covid never stopped.

      Well, with wages having remained stagnant compared to the cost-of-living for so long and inflation, and corporations laying off everyone left and right in order to maximize profits then who’s going to afford these things even if RAM prices weren’t going to increase?

      And given how Unreal Engine is used and tailored by Epic (productivity and shiny graphics first and foremost, doing things „right“ last), I press X for doubt that they won’t exacerbate this problem.

      Why I’m saying this is that Epic’s own Fortnite has been having performance issue symptoms from the Unreal Engine 5 upgrade, which have been getting very, ***very*** slowly patched out throughout season updates. For example asynchronous shader compilation in DirectX 12 mode finally being a thing since the Star Wars season, 5.5 years after the introduction of DirectX 12 mode in Fortnite. Shader compilation stuttering has always been a thing there, but became much worse since Epic switched to Unreal Engine 5 for Fortnite, on top of higher RAM usage.

      So if Epic’s own flagship game and engine isn’t the best role model, it would be great if Tim Sweeney will let positive actions speak more than words. Of course this is quite a lengthy comment from me for such a short Tweet for him, but knowing some of these details can make one view his words in a different context. Such as the detail that he responded to a screenshot Tweet of a 64 GB RAM kit. It kinda conveys a subtle sentiment as if games may break the 32 GB RAM mark in the next years, assuming that games with objectively underwhelming performance (e.g. Borderlands 4) set new negative bars for „high end gaming.“

      It’s time to regulate AI to the extreme. We only need a few companies utilizing it. It’s clearly a massive drain on resources and a great deal of the public doesn’t want it pre-installed in their consumer products outside of something like a phone assistant.

      At least high end GPUs have a limited user base.

      RAM and storage is in literally everything , it’s basically an additional tariff added to electronics.

      TVs should not need ram or have a operating system. It just needs to be a displays with audio.

      Our world is coming to a fork, one where we accept corporate overlords hoarding computer technology so they can enslave us with subscription cloud services, or one where open source becomes so strong that everyone is able to power what they would use the cloud for, with their own basic home lab server.

      One will be cheaper too.

      The convention center in my city is being transformed into a data center. This data center is going to get priority access to unlimited electricity at about 1/4 of the price that the citizens of my metro area pay. There are no plans to make up for the electricity delta loss. We already have regular power outages due to demand – especially in summer. The local news brought this concern to the state utility commission and their answer was that we can expect more frequent and longer outages once the data center is online and that we (residents) need to plan for interruptions and use battery backups and solar and generators to remain powered.

      Fuck AI. I hope the ecoterrorists are at the ready to make sure the data centers have a bad time.
