It has been rumoured for decades that King was not actually indigenous. His backstory is typical of a lot of pretendians, and at a certain point there was either deliberate ignorance if not active malfeasance.

It’s a pretty supreme irony that his famous book *The Inconvenient Indian* got adapted into a CBC documentary by Michelle Latimer. They’re both the most inconvenient type of Indian. At some point the CBC has got to wise up to the fact that half the indigenous people they fête aren’t actually indigenous. It almost feels like wilful denial at this point given that a lot of these people don’t even look one iota like they are indigenous.
