Real median family income is already accounting for the increase in rent prices!

You are adjusting for inflation twice

      This is garbage data

Please learn what inflation means and what “real median family income” means before posting this

Rent has definitely outpaced income growth, but not by a factor of 10. I’d believe a difference of 50% or something, but not 900%, like that’s such an insane number it doesn’t make sense.

      There are two issues:
      1. The real median family income is adjusted for inflation, but the rent price index is not.
      2. The rent price index is only for cities while income includes the entire US, including rural areas, so rent growth looks inflated relative to income.

So TLDR this graph is nonsense. It does look nice though.

Unless I’m mistaken, rent is only looking at urban centers while income is looking at the entire US. You’re missing rental costs in suburban and rural areas from your median calculation, which I assume would dramatically lower the median. Or if you only factor income for people renting in urban centers, the median income should increase some.

    4. If you’re going to post to a data sub, try to have the tiniest understanding of data.

One of your curves is inflation adjusted. The other is not. Either make them both adjusted or both in nominal dollars.
