    1. When I was younger I owned celestron brand and absolutely loved them so I would assume yes? Could you tell us the model number? I’d be happy to offer a second opinion.

    2. It really depends on what you’re expecting to see with it. If you want to look at the moon its ok. If you want to see planets not so much unless you’re planing to see stuff this planet.

That appears to be a Celestron Starsense DX 100AZ

      Here is a review https://telescopicwatch.com/popular-science-celestron-starsense-explorer-dx-100az-refractor-review/

It doesn’t have a built-in camera so you cannot take images through it via an app. You can try to take images afocally through the eyepiece during your phone but you need a phone holder and you need to get it lined up properly and you need to learn how to use a camera app manually

The StarSense app is a tool to help you point the telescope, it does use images of the sky to determine where it is pointing, but it is not intended as an Astro imaging tool

    4. Best recommendation is to find a local astronomy club. “It’s all black” can be a large number of reasons. Some are as simple as some cap is on, others might be what you’re pointing at. I assume you’re putting your eye to the eyepiece and not your phone to the eye piece.

    5. From the picture I can tell that the eyepiece is not properly installed. It’s sticking out, the silver part should be completely inside the diagonal mirror.

The reason you can’t see anything is likely that you are way out of focus. Insert the eyepiece properly, aim the telesope at a distant terrestrial target during daytime and focus using the focus knob.

Once you can see things through the telescope, you should align the red dot finder to match the view of the telescope.

    6. For observing the moon, absolutely. Anything more than that it would be a challenge. Jupiter and Saturn would also be okay. Deep space objects like Messier you might see but without color and probably pretty faint, for that you’ll need bigger aperture size. Should be a really good starting telescope and then some.

It gets good reviews and for the price point it’s good.  The starsense app gets great reviews and is designed to allow you to find objects in the sky. The best you will do for taking pictures with this scope is likely a cell phone adapter.

I have a similar scope to this.  Celestron omni 102 that does not have the star sense capability.  I’m able to see planets and moon of course, but I’m also able to see nebula, galaxies, and star clusters.  Note that the nebula and galaxies are little smudges (this isn’t the hubble) but it’s pretty cool to see these things with your own eyes and the starsense app will help you find them.

If you want to get into it…I highly recommend the youtube channels learntostargaze and small optics.  Both of them are very well suited to beginners.

But yes…for what it is you have a capable telescope especially for visual.

If you want to do photography it’s not the best tool for that.

Adding:  this is a video of the omni 102 which will get very similar views to your scope. Toward the end he uses photography to simulate the visual views you can get from your telescope.
