      Won’t matter much if illegal mining is not stopped. The rest of the world can pay for that, Colombia won’t do much to make it stop.

      80% of the country’s gold produced illegally.

      Well, duh. There are acres upon acres of pristine National Forests in the US for sale on the cheap and flush with natural resources. Time to offshore those drilling, mining, logging operations!

      Step in the right direction. Now they just need to ban the meat industry from causing so much deforestation.

      Colombia has a pretty good record on protecting their portion of the Amazon. A lot of land has been officially protected. Sadly, the armed conflict has also helped protect a lot of it by way of fear. Illegal mining remains a huge environmental threat though.
