trump just gave credence and hosted a terrorist at the white house. When the press did their job and tried to ask him about the person he murdered, the current president shut them down and called them names and said they should have their broadcast license revoked.

I’m not about to cape for Maduro because it’s well understood that he’s a dictator and that most Venezuelans want him gone, but let’s put this in context. The Trump administration has been designating various Latin American gangs as terrorist organizations to do legally questionable things both in the US and in international waters.

On the international waters front, the US has been killing men on various boats for months under the justification that they were drug boats bringing drugs to the US, essentially implying those men were gang members pushing drugs. Again, if they are these drug gang members, then they are terrorists to this administration.

So by designating Maduro as a terrorist, he’s trying to establish a permission structure to assassinate Maduro. Again, I get that Venezuelans want Maduro gone, but based on what I’ve seen from Trump, if he does assassinate Maduro, he’s going to do so before establishing ties with the local populace to work with them on what they need post-Maduro. I’ll give the smallest benefit of the doubt that maybe his not so covert CIA operations are building that groundwork.

I’ll also plant some food for thought in case some people haven’t already held this as a possibility. Recall that the ceasefire deal the US brokered with Hamas and Israel includes rebuilding Gaza with a board of technocrats **for which Trump would be the director**. Also recall that Trump has talked about Gaza potentially one day being the Riviera of the Middle East and that it would be great place to develop. It’s reasonable to suspect that Trump wants to personally benefit from any deals on Gaza.

I suspect that if Trump does end up getting rid of Maduro, he’s going to try to capitalize on the power vacuum and being the one who got rid of dictator to work out highly favorable business deals for himself and his family. I’m not going to judge Venezuelans negatively if they’re willing to deal with that over dealing with a dictator, so it’s just a word of caution for how to proceed if things happen in a way similar to what my hypothetical scenario outlines.

That said, as a US citizen, I can’t say I approve of a US President designating a head of state as a terrorist in a way that is clearly pulling it out of his ass. All this Venezuela stuff doesn’t look to me like he actually cares about the people of Venezuela but rather that it’s serving his own selfish interests, whether it’s distractions from Epstein, planning to create a new business opportunity, or simply trying to maintain the air of doing something substantive about the US’s drug problem. It’s yet another potential sign of open greed. And when a US President really stretches definitions of a term like “terrorist” and has already demonstrated a propensity to kill some of those “terrorists” in legally questionable ways that his government at home won’t punish him for, that makes other countries antsy.

It makes me antsy as a US citizen because what’s stopping him from doing the exact same thing to a US citizen, especially when his administration, his party, and the US right wing media ecosystem have on many occasions run cover for him in the general public? I already saw how much people’s words don’t mater once Trump, the Republican Party, and conservative media all agree on a narrative. During the 2024 election, Vance and Trump lies to the public over and over about Haitian immigrants eating people’s pets in Springfield, Ohio. This started because of a woman making a racist assumption she shared with the cops as a fact when she couldn’t find her cat… which had been in her basement. For weeks as local police investigated, the police department, the mayor, and even the governor of Ohio were trying to tell people that the things they were hearing were not confirmed, and eventually concluded that there was no eaten cat. By then, the Republican Party political machine decided to run with that shit.

This led to Springfield schools, government offices, and government officials getting bomb threats, death threats, and all sorts of lesser harassment. The bomb threats to the school led to students being home for multiple days out of an abundance of caution. The city burned through a lot of money to pay for more security. And to this day, I’m not sure Trump and Vance have ever admitted that they were sowing lies to the American people. And all this, to them, was worth stoking the flames of fear toward immigrants to score political points.

Americans fucking voted for him again, and I bet that includes multiple residents of Springfield, Ohio.
