President [Trump](https://www.wsj.com/topics/person/donald-trump) lashed out at Ukrainian and European officials on Sunday, as they launched a diplomatic offensive aimed at reshaping a 28-point peace plan that has been criticized as too favorable to Russia.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump called the war a “loser” for everyone and said Ukrainian leaders had expressed “zero” gratitude for U.S. efforts. He said Europeans continue to buy oil from Russia.

Trump’s comments came as top Ukrainian officials met in Geneva on Sunday with the national security advisers of France, Germany and the U.K., as well as U.S. officials involved in discussing next steps on the proposal. A U.S. official said the meetings had been constructive and further talks will focus on ironing out details of the agreement.

Sunday’s talks had been “probably the most productive and meaningful meeting so far in this entire process since we have been involved,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in Geneva.

He said the two sides had gone through the U.S. proposal point-by-point. Officials were “making some changes, some adjustments in the hopes of further narrowing the differences and getting closer to something that both Ukraine and obviously the United States are very comfortable with,” he said.

Andriy Yermak, head of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s office, said talks would continue in coming days to refine and align proposals in consultation with European officials. Yermak and Rubio said Trump and the Ukrainian president would need to sign off on any changes.

Zelensky thanked Trump for his efforts a short time after Trump posted on social media, but he suggested further work needed to be done to settle on a final agreement.

“It’s important to not forget the main goal—to stop the Russian war and prevent it from breaking out again in the future,” Zelensky wrote on social media. “That’s why we’re so carefully working on every point, on every step toward peace.”

Trump had given Ukraine a [Thursday deadline](https://www.wsj.com/world/zelensky-russia-ukraine-trump-peace-plan-335c3cdd?mod=article_inline) to respond to the proposal, which would require that Kyiv cede territory to Russia, block its ambitions to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and cap the size of its military amid other major economic and political concessions to Moscow. Ukraine has said the plan needs adjustments with European input.

The challenge for Kyiv has been to remain conciliatory toward Trump while charting a course for further talks that could extract concessions from the Russian side. Endorsing a version of the U.S. plan that is stacked more in its favor would put pressure back on Moscow to yield on key points.

But weighting the deal more toward Ukraine is likely to make any peace settlement more elusive. Russian President [Vladimir Putin](https://www.wsj.com/world/zelensky-russia-ukraine-trump-peace-plan-335c3cdd#phrase-person?ref=PERSON%7CPutin%2C%20Vladimir;onlineSignificance=passing-mention) has said the U.S. plan could form the basis for a peace settlement, but key points would need to be amended.

When this is all over, there’s going to a mini-series about how one man pushed Europe to reassert itself on the global stage after 75 years of time-out after WWII.

One man undermined a whole century of diplomatic efforts to place the US as the head of the table against Russian and Chinese influence.

    3. There is just no reason to „blast“. No one could say this was supposed to be the final draft. First off the proposal is just a Ukrainian surrender that Europe wouldn’t accept. Second off the draft itself is written so bad it needed reshaping even if Ukraine was willing to surrender. It’s so obvious Trump hasn’t read the draft.

If the Budapest memorandum was worthless, what security guarantees will he enforced to prevent this from repeating unless the Ukraine is part of an alliance ? Asking for a friend because having the USA commit to protect UKRAINE is worthless given that they can change their minds whenever they want about this war.

While we may be able to improve it marginally, I think if Ukraine waits their prospects won’t improve

Trump can nuke me for all I care!!! I’ll do my best to roast any European politician supporting this “plan”.

    7. What annoys me is the notion that europe was asleep or somehow didn’t want to be a global player. That’s not true. The US bought off Europe with security guarantees in exchange for being allowed to set the agenda.

The setup was agreeable to both parties since our agendas were very much aligned. That is, until very recently.

Obama complained a bit about it because the EU was having global impact, so then they should contribute more for defense, which isn’t unreasonable.

Then Trump decided that might makes right and started to blackmail almost(?) all former allies.

This is not a peace plan.. this is Putin’s Christmas wish list..

Trump is just Russia’s messenger boy..

    11. This dude is completely amoral. He doesn’t care about Ukraine or Europe or, for that mater, Russia or America, he just wants a ceasefire that he can claim is his work so he gets the Nobel Peace Price. It’s all about himself, as always.

It’s not a US peace deal but a Russian peace deal. We all know it, they all know it. Russia is even laughing at you for even proposing it to the world.

Bottom line, US under a pretty useless Trump, a suspect Putin ally. Europe has to wake up. Trump wants a divided Europe, why ? beats me. But Europe needs to unite even stronger, get rid of Orban and his like. But you don’t have long.

    14. Frankly I think it would be for the best if Trumps America stopped trying to negotiate peace over the head of Ukraine and just sold arms and intel.

I think Trump is trying to force a deal fast cause otherwise US will lose money in this war. On the long term, If the war continues Russia will slowly get more and more territories as the Ukraine’s army has no way to get more recruits and also they surely have a problem with corruption which makes everything even more difficult for them.
If Trump can’t force a deal fast, US will lose money and won’t get paid for all the military equipment they provided as Ukraine will cease to exist or will become so small that its economy and resources will be almost inexistent. Also US would lose credibility on the international stage while Russian will gain a strong image – that’s also probably another reason why Trump tries to make it look as him and Putin are good friends…

    16. Do we even need the WSJ here? It is hardly a unbiased voice from the banana republic.

And meanwhile, Palestinians in Gaza are being murdered by Israel again!!!

Trump is a car/real estate salesman and he NEVER will do the right thing, it’s about his pocket. Just look at everything he touches.

    18. Maybe just Maybe the EU will finally stop dancing around the issue and confront Russia and the US on this matter.

    19. Trump is Putin’s useful fool all the time. America did not draft the so-called peace treaty. its got Putin’s words all over it. it only favours Russia; they have asked Ukraine to almost surrender everything, its lands and freedom. in the guise of peace, and Trump fell for it every time.

    20. Of course the useful idiot employed by Kremlin is upset others don’t just accept and capitulate to his boss

    21. It’s going to be a rough couple of weeks as Trump goes on a bully run against Ukraine. I think it’s fairly obvious that Ukraine won’t agree by Thursday and America will probably shut off the intel sharing again. The bots will be going crazy here too.

    22. What? Blowjob Don is not happy? I tought he would be with Putins dick so far down his throat.

As much as I hate Trump, the good thing is he is finally giving Europeans a wake up call. My idea of the future of the democratic order is a spiderweb of interlocking alliance, where each element is strong enough to stand on its own. Europe strengthening itself is good for the future of democracy and the free world.

Europe will be more independent o la the US, but is that a bad thing?
