For anyone who didn’t read the article, the reason this is actually stupidly important and absolutely baffling that it’s only happening now is because the dummy that’s been used as the ’standard‘ this entire time has been based on “ a 5ft 9in, 171lb man“.
Most women are…not 5’9 and weigh 171lbs. Hell, most men aren’t either. Crash test dummies, if the interest is genuinely to protect people, should be able to simulate actual people. This is a step towards that.

Took them long enough to actually realize that women drive too.
Reminds me that improvements are still needed for plane evacuation tests. The test are always partially filled plans with thin, fit people. No one is overweight, no one trying to grab baggage, no one has a disability or needs to wait for a wheelchair.

This got me thinking about the crash test dummies the Mythbusters had. Buster being the most famous. I know they had some children crash test dummies. I am trying to remember if they had an adult female dummy.
Reading the article, it’s quite surprising to read how little is known about the forces exerted on the arms, spine and other parts between the old and new dummies…
