I’m genuinely surprised that a simple, intuitive technology like a foot-controlled mouse isn’t already widely available. It often feels like everyday tech tools are designed without fully considering the huge diversity of people who use them.

To me, future-focused engineering should always keep accessibility at the core, not as an afterthought. Every piece of hardware should have built-in alternatives or add-on options so more people can use it comfortably, whether for health reasons, ergonomics, or just preference.

What do you think? Should accessibility-driven design be a standard expectation for future tech, rather than a niche feature?

The foot mouse: how it works and why it can help those with disabilities or carpal tunnel syndrome.

NaviFut is a huge hit on Kickstarter and is aimed at those who want to extend PC control to their lower limbs.
Sometimes a change of perspective can create interesting ideas, as in the case of NaviFut, which presents itself as a foot mouse . Instead of placing it on the desk, it sits on the floor, flattening its shape and essentially offering the same functionality as a traditional hand-controlled peripheral . The goal is to offer an accessory that is easier to use for people with disabilities or for the entire group of users with conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome , or for those who simply want to extend computer interaction to their lower limbs , for gaming or productivity.

      How NaviFut Works

Over the years, amateur foot controller projects have emerged, not forgetting the classic pedals commonly used for games like racing simulations . Yet, a true foot mouse designed for the general public as an alternative to the classic handheld mouse is lacking. The idea appeared on Kickstarter , meeting with good success, and played on the name, calling itself more of a rat than a mouse , given its larger dimensions. The flat, wheel-driven support was designed specifically to be controlled by the movements of the lower limbs. Compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux and with a Bluetooth module for wireless communication up to 10 meters, NaviFut integrates a 30-day battery life that can be recharged via USB, making it plug-and-play and therefore requiring no installation, just like traditional mice.

Obviously, it doesn’t require clicking with your toes; in fact, it can be controlled even while wearing shoes . As shown in the presentation video, it features two large clickable areas on the upper left and right corners that can be pressed with the entire tip of the foot. At the same time, simply place your heel on the lower part so as to spread your weight evenly over the central surface and then move the entire structure left and right or back and forth and the cursor on the display will repeat the same action . Silent, lightweight, and made of recycled plastic, NaviFut is designed for people with disabilities who would struggle to control a mouse with their hands, for those who suffer (or don’t want to suffer) from carpal tunnel syndrome, or for those who want to combine keyboard control with both hands and the mouse with their feet for productivity software or gaming.

      How to order NaviFut

You can support the NaviFut project on Kickstarter with a special starting amount of €69, which includes a €40 discount on the retail price, and receive one of the first units produced. Shipments will also be available in Italy and will begin in March 2026.
