That crisis: they ran out of money.

Oh no, my heart bleeds for them Saudi princes.

Doubt there were actual plans to build it, whole thing is impractical and likely was just an investor cash grab.

  3. … because here is the thing about these megaprojects: coming up with unrealistic headline-grabbing BS is quite easy. A few “world-class” consultants have made a lot of money on this.

I want to know, of all the concepts for a brand new type of futuristic city, what convinced them that this was the way to go? Obviously it’s such a huge investment there must be something about making it all in a line configuration. I can see how that could introduce revolutionary ways to travel the city, no intersections, no turns.

It’s just such a massive project, supposed to be taller and wider than the empire State building, but 170km long? Why not start with something a bit smaller as a proof of concept that people will actually enjoy living there. It’s kind of hard to predict the preferences of people.

Wow all the money in the world made from poisoning our planet and they can’t even build their crappy vanity project

(not to mention funding extremism and corruption worldwide)

  6. Can you imagine the if these idiots invested that money in solar or a HVDC line to Europe? Moronic.

    Half built?

Maybe half of the first phase of deep foundations. But then there are like 50 deep foundation stages not yet commenced.

It’s a 170km long project, the first phase is 2.4km. So if they had completed the first phase it would’ve been 1.4%

But they didn’t complete the first phase, they didnt even complete the foundation of the first phase – the first phase was going to require 30,000 piles, they got 1,000 done – so 3% of pile work.

But piles are only like 5% of foundation work – so foundation stage is at about 0.15% of phase one or 0.0021% of the total project foundation.

If foundations are 5% of the project (I think I’m being super generous, I think they’re closer to about 2 or 3% – but that’s too hard for me). So right now the project is at about 0.0001% complete.

    Ya – half fucking built.

Edit – that means it’s one, one millionth complete. If you had an Olympic sized swimming pool, it’s 2 liters of water. It’s tiny

  8. Any money spent is total waste. Would have made tidy profit on interest alone had it been deposited in high yield savings or money market.

Look at the plan… entirely renewable energy, it was never gonna happen in Saudi Arabia. Just MBS playing games.

This idea never made sense in any way. I suspect it was always just a vehicle for massive grift.

Dubai trying to cover itself in concrete and glass. Taste is so crass.

  12. Imagine getting scammed by every major architectural firm on the planet. And realizing you subsidized OpenAI’s operation.

That stupid thing was never gonna get built. It’s a child’s sci-fi fantasy and a logistical nightmare. Too bad the Saudi regime already *relocated* the rural tribes living along the proposed path.

It sounded like a good idea in sim city or in a game. IRL? Probably not so much.

Just how isolated do you have to be to think this stupid shit is a good idea?

I don’t gamble. But if someone had offered me any odds that this bulding project wouldn’t have made it when it was first announced, I would have found $5 in pocket change to put toward this very conclusion.

You mean what everyone but them Expected… who do they think they are China?

I can’t believe it got past the cocktail napkin drawing buncha‘ drunk rich guys talking fantasy shit phase of implementation.

  19. This might be the best example of “infrastructure washing” I’ve seen to date. I was reading one of the Epstein files emails how the Saudis are spending their oil wealth like drunk sailers and this is a good example of it lol.
