What’s going to win here I wonder, direct action to make peoples commutes more bearable or ignore the problem in the interest of office real estate investors

Well let’s hope they actually do something. With more and more people being pushed to live further afield because of house prices, whilst all the jobs remain in Dublin, it’s only going to continue to get substantially worse over the next 10 years.

In an ideal world there would be a staggering of start and finish times. Unfortunately, we’ve set up our society on the basis of 9-5, Monday to Friday.

Compounding the issue is the previously mentioned “hybrid” working model “TWAT” (Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursdays) in the office.

The real answer is actually just make a decent rail network, almost every major city and commuter belt in the world has this figured out but for some reason we love the US so much we copy their ways of doing things and so households with like 4 cars are not outside the norm here…

How credible is this?

My boss requires onsite through the worst commute times in Galway traffic. Ultimately the business needs and “policy” will win out.

Do I have this right:

Pandemic forces WFH on many Irish employees.
Many of these workers move farther from where they work as it’s more affordable and they have WFH or flex and can handle a long commute a few days a week.

The pandemic is over, or not as risky as it was.

Employers realise they’re paying big bucks for half-empty offices. They also have a 20th century mindset that workers need to be supervised and to work regular office hours to be effective.

Employers start calling back staff full time.

Employees are faced with long commutes in worsening traffic and atrocious public transport.

Have I missed anything?

They could do what they did before COVID .

Easily fixed, if a job can be done remotely, but for whatever reason employees are ordered to return to the office, make the employer pay;

– A congestion charge every day for every employee forced to commute

– A childcare allowance to the affected employees

– Pollution/Emissions tax annually based on amount of unnecessary travel required by employees.

There is absolutely no reason to have employees who worked just fine remotely from 2020 to now, return to the office. It puts unnecessary strain on our infrastructure and its abusive toward the employees themselves. If you absolutely MUST have them in office that’s fine, pay for it.

No election for 4 years, so we’ll hear more about a vague plan then. They see no need to give us anything before then.

As I’ve said on many threads lately, this comes down to a chicken & egg scenario with car ownership. For public transport to be efficient the cars (mostly) need to go. There’s too many and they clog up the roads meaning our bus services can’t get to where it needs to go on time.

I will say to their credit, the government and local councils have paved the way to providing excellent cycling infrastructure which is being delivered across Dublin at the moment. I feel it’s a cultural thing with Irish people, we cling on to the cars, and deep down some people know that the daily trips they take in their cars probably could be done on foot, on a bike or a bus/luas/dart

This would go a great distance towards shortening commutes for people who are needed to RTO on a more regular basis

The M50 is a joke. To get in before 7.30, i need to leave by 6.30. I don’t actualy start until 8.30, but if i aim for that, i’m on the M50 for 2 hours every morning, and regularly late for work.

Coupled with that, the M1 corridor, which i have to join 1st, is being promoted internationally for business and housing for foreign investment, means there is another grid lock before you can even get to the M50.

Between tolls and petrol, it’s 3k a year, just to get to work from North Dublin to the Naas road with traffic jams, and 15 hours for out of my time per week.

Could they not zone land for industrial units/business and housing further afield of the counties around Dublin. Bring more jobs to rural areas. Create vibrant communities in Wexford, Carlow, Monaghan, Longford, Westmeath,etc, *and further*. Put an end to country folk having to move out of their towns looking for work. Invest in infrastructure where great towns in Ireland have more to offer than limited well paying job numbers, and low pay shop or cafe paying jobs.

Dublin is choked. It’s about time these morons started considering the people around the Island with proper work and living opportunites, reducing travel costs/carbon waste etc. The amount of people sitting in cars and vans trying to get into/out of Dublin every day is an absolute farce.

All they keep doing, is building up Dublin further with houses, data centres and new factories. Why does’nt Mallow, Tuam, Claremorris, Castleblaney or wher ever have these kind of opportunities for young workers?
Because of planning. They plan it, then the workers build them.

Dublin is full. The country isn’t. There are thousands of tradesmen sitting in cars and vans heading into Dublin and surrounding areas every day, doing hundreds of miles at huge costs, either to themselves or business owners, because that’s where the money and jobs are, by design of these twats planning it all.

I genuinely don’t understand what they have to gain from not giving people SOME kind of balance here.

I worked in Meta, where they had a ludicrously expensive building before moving to an even bigger building, which was on 6 floors. When I started, their focus wasn’t on office work, they were happy for us to come in and do work if we wanted, but didn’t care. We were at home 99% of the time. The amount of money they pissed away with canteens full of food, tech vending machines and yet we STILL knew they couldnt give a fuck if we were there or not. But they also provided those things to encourage people to stay in the office as much as possible. Be there for breakfast, lunch, dinner, few drinks after work. They created a culture where if you were susceptible to being swallowed up by the corporate big shot lifestyle, you would be.

Fast forward to now where you have companies like AIB forcing staff back to the office, providing them with a pitiful canteen, basic bitch facilities and having to listen to Mary talk shite about her boring weekend whether you want to or not. The sheer impact of forcing people back into the office, along with having massive commute times (at a stage where transport is so consistently unreliable) is so backwards and there’s no justification for it.

I now work for another Fintech company whose remote option has been there before Covid, so I am thankful there’s no pressure to ever return to the office. But it just feels like these companies are doing this for the sole purpose of saving themselves having to do layoffs. I had an opportunity to work with Tiktok and I am so glad I didn’t move there, it seems like such a volatile place to work.

Regardless, I hope that workers are given more rights and/or options. This goes beyond any temporary measures put in place during Covid, stupidly high rents and „office synergy“, if you put an individual in a position where they are meeting their contractual obligations and have to choose between working from home and doing a 3 hour commute, you’re not interested in their morale or work/life balance, you’re either trying to make them quit or want them to feel like they’re under the microscope. These fucking idiotic companies don’t give a shit about office comradery. They want people to feel like they’re under the thumb and have no control how 1/3 of their day will be spent.

Anyone with a three hour commute has unilaterally decided to work remotely and probably lied to their employer. It’s on them.
