Running roughshod over BC is a risky move. The Liberals‘ seats are in urban ridings, and not in those areas that are most likely to support a northern pipeline. Moreover, it would be a betrayal of whatever friendly agreement Carney made with May to get her support for the budget.

And if any project does move forward we *will* see widespread protests of the Wet’suwet’en variety. Because it just so happens that some of those bands who remain in opposition are also those who engaged in those protests.

They’re just lucky that there isn’t a left-wing politician in BC who is cynical enough to wield sovereignty like a cudgel. Smith likes to talk about Albertan sovereignty and being mistreated by Ottawa, but similarly BC could make a stink about sovereignty and *generations* of poor treatment by Ottawa. Decades on decades of softwood lumber disputes, salmon fishery disputes, [money laundering](https://www.vancouverisawesome.com/bc-news/feds-failing-to-enforce-money-laundering-crimes-bc-inquiry-concludes-5493012), even [blockades ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Salmon_War)and [boat people](https://www.cnn.com/WORLD/americas/9908/11/canada.smugglers/); there’s a lot of dry timber ready to flare up if someone in the BC NDP were willing to light the match.

If they want to move forward with it there’s not much the Province of BC can really do about it except raise an uncomfortable and putrid political stink.

I, for one, have never voted Liberal and at this rate never will.
